Storey Could Miss The Rest Of The Season

Miles Storey could miss the rest of the season according to a report in the Hereford Times.

The forward suffered an injury at Kettering last Tuesday week and had to be taken off late in the first half after scoring.

"It's probably a grade two hamstring which means six to eight weeks out," said manager Josh Gowling.

"He's progressed really well and doing a lot more stuff today with the physio but his season is pretty much done I would say.

"It's a blow and Miles has been a big part in what we've done this season."

There is also doubt whether either of Hereford's keepers will be available for the game. Neither played at Blyth last Saturday and Gowling had to bring in a keeper.

QPR Track Former Hereford Loanee Keeper

Jordan Wright Behind Hereford Captain Jared Hodgkiss

QPR are reported to be tracking Jordan Wright who earlier this season was on loan with Hereford FC.

Wright is currently keeping goal for Lincoln City after moving from Nottingham Forest. His chance came after Hereford born Josh Griffiths sustained an injury. Griffiths is on loan at Sincil Bank from West Brom.

Club Clarify Buy One Get One Free Ticket Offer

Earlier today BN published an article which, in essence, suggested that it was difficult to obtain a free ticket for next Saturday's game against Alfreton.

In particular it was felt that those not living near Hereford would probably miss out on the offer.

Since publication Hereford FC have been in touch with some clarification about the offer.

  • We cannot make this offer available online or over the phone as the National Lottery requires clubs to have physical sight of each lottery ticket before giving the free ticket (we’re not allowed to accept photocopies or photos of tickets either)
  • The lottery have imposed the 1:30pm cut off on matchday, not us
  • We have opened the ticket office earlier (11am instead of 1pm) so that supporters have additional time on the day to purchase their ticket – we felt this was better option than opening during an evening in the week as supporters who live away from Edgar Street would be able to take advantage of the offer by setting off for Edgar Street a little earlier, rather than having to make a special trip to the ground during the week.

Not So Easy To Buy One Get One Free

Next Saturday The National Lottery's Buy One Get One Free ticket offer comes to Hereford for the game against Alfreton.

However whilst it was originally thought it would be easy to obtain a free ticket for a friend or someone who hasn't been recently this does not seem to be the case.

According to Hereford FC the offer is not available online or on the telephone.

It looks like the only ways to purchase a second ticket will be from the club shop today or Friday (10am to 4pm) or from the ticket office before the game on Saturday.

And if you are thinking of buying before the game the purchase must be done by 1.30pm.

Whilst the reasons why the club are restricting ways to purchase a free tickets have not been made public, it looks as though there must be quite a lot of work involved with this offer.

However given Hereford has a lot of supporters living outside the city the reward of buying a free ticket might not be worthwhile given the the cost of getting to Hereford especially with the price of fuel and time involved.

As one supporter suggested is the chance to welcome casual supporters being taken as much as it could be?

Do You Remember?

Birmingham Sports Argus reporter Tom Duckworth: “Hereford have a fantastic set of supporters who both in numbers and in terms of vocal support can be depended on to dwarf the efforts of supporters of most Third and Fourth Division clubs.”

In their forthcoming issue, print-pioneers Talking Bull fanzine are featuring the day Hereford United were elected to the Football League. That huge event is approaching its 50th anniversary. The quote above was included in one of several features run by the Argus that weekend. Duckworth and a photographer toured the city on Friday night to capture that “We’re in” feeling.

Were you there? Do you remember how you heard the news? Where you celebrated, how and with whom? The feature is already a decent read yet would be so much more appealing if more of our mature following can share their memories.

If you can help, please email editor Simon via his email simon@baggies.com or grab him at the Alfreton game. All articles need to be written by April 8 so sharing your anecdotes rather than later is definitely better.

Quiet Midweek For National North League Clubs

It's a quiet midweek for National North Clubs with no midweek fixtures in the League.

It gives clubs like Hereford a chance to give players returning from injury a little longer to recover.

Last Saturday midfielder Ryan Lloyd came on as a substitute at Blyth after Keenan Pattern appeared to suffer a nasty injury.

Lloyd has missed eight games since picking up an injury in the home game against Guiseley on February 12th. And during his absence the Bulls have only won one of those games, at Chester on February 19th. Put another way they've gained seven points out of a possible twenty four.

It's has to be hoped Lloyd will be fit enough to start against Alfreton on Saturday.

He's been missed.

Senedd Member Backs Fair Game

Newport County supporter Jayne Bryant has become the first member of the Senedd to back Fair Game.

“As a lifelong supporter of Newport County AFC, I am proud to support Fair Game," said Bryant.

“County has shown how it can be done. Our club came so close to losing it all, and it is only through the hard-work and determination of the fans and all of the people behind Newport County AFC that we have a club at all. County is now a supporter-owned and community-driven club that’s going from strength to strength. It embodies what we all want the sport to be.

“But up and down the country, clubs too often fall victim to owners who have no interest in the community they rely on. This is why we need reform. I want to see more clubs make the change that County has. That’s why I’m very happy to back Fair Game’s call for independent regulation and more fan leadership in football.”

Owen-Evans In National North Team Of The Week

Lottery Players - Invite A Friend To Watch Hereford For Free

Next Saturday's game at Edgar Street, which is against Alfreton, is part of the National Lottery Football Weekends which allow those who play the lottery to get a second ticket to watch the game free of charge.

Here are some details as posted by Hereford FC:

If you are a National Lottery player, you will be able to come and watch our home match against Alfreton on the 2nd of April with a friend and get one of the tickets for free. Tickets will be available in due course and announced on our website.

As fans, you know full well how damaging the pandemic has been to clubs like ours. With a halt in the football calendar and no gate revenue, there were serious fears about the future of many clubs. Thankfully National Lottery players stepped in to protect many local football clubs, providing £12.5million of support to clubs in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

As thanks for the essential support, 231 clubs in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are now taking part in The National Lottery Football Weekends. Each club will, for one home fixture, run a special ‘Buy One Get One Free’ ticket offer for National Lottery players to take someone – potentially for the very first time – to a game.

Mothers Deserve More Credit Said Gowling

Josh Gowling

In Josh Gowling's latest column for the Guardian, the Hereford manager suggests that mothers deserve more credit.

He says that his mother always ensured he could make the best of himself.

'In 2003 I was released by West Brom. I rang her in tears but she said: “Look, it’s happened. What are we going to do now? Let’s go!” She immediately made me write letters to clubs and, within a week, I was in Denmark to sign for Herfølge. My mum paid for the plane ticket there and really pushed me to do it.'

Now Gowling is a manager and father and it's his partner who has to deal with the unsocial hours that go with the territory.

'In my role as Hereford manager I drive about 1,000 miles a week between Grimsby, Hereford and Birmingham, where we train. We often have two games and it means time at home with my partner, Becky, and our two young children can be limited. When you get that space with them and can just switch off, immersing yourself in everything they are doing, it’s vital to make the most of it. Becky is an incredible mum: she runs two businesses alongside doing most of the childcare, and I can’t speak enough about how supportive she is. I can get stressed sometimes but she is positive, calm, composed and sees the best in people.

'Partnerships like ours are sometimes hard to find when you work in this industry. I did not meet Becky until I was 32 and, until then, found it hard to sustain relationships: I was constantly on the move and everything came second behind football to me. I’ve lived in about 18 different places since I left home at 16, and you cannot take for granted that someone will want to move around with you, potentially foregoing elements of their life for your career. I did not want to put that upon someone: I wanted to wait until I felt I could lay down some roots and think a little bit more about the family side of life, while being in a position to help another person achieve their own aspirations and goals. If we had met 10 years ago, we probably would not be together.'

National North League Round Up

National League North’s main title chasers both failed to pick up three points.

Gateshead were held to a timid goalless draw by Bradford PA.

Brackley Town couldn’t take advantage - a late goal from Spennymoor Town’s Jude Oyibo means they returned home with just a point in the 1-1 draw.

Kidderminster Harriers blitzed Curzon Ashton 5-0, Amari Morgan-Smith got two goals.

Kurt Willoughby ensured York City back on track with the winner against Leamington.

James Rowe didn’t have a successful return to Gloucester City - the Tigers beat AFC Fylde 1-0, Lucas Tomlinson scoring early.

Elsewhere there were important wins for Hereford, Chester, Kettering and Darlington.

Tom Takes Control

Pictures From Andy Walkden

Hereford only had four substitutes at Kettering on Tuesday night as National League regulations say you can only play 4 on loan players. With both Hall and Sondergaard having Covid emergency loan signing from Grimsby Ollie Battersby made his debut in goal at Blyth this afternoon.

Skipper Hodgkiss was back at right back with Pearce, Pollock, and Revan (loanee) continuing in defence. Haines and Patten (loanee) sat in front with Pinchard, Owen-Evans and McLean behind Touray (loanee). On the bench were loanees Egan and Wright, Klukowski, Gillela and Lloyd. Faal not making the squad, and Storey out for a while with a strain.

Hereford looked lively from the start although Blyth also had a couple of early opportunities. McLean played through by Tom missed a good chance. Minutes later Ryan pounced on a poor back pass and rounded the keeper to score from a difficult angle.

McNall had a good opportunity, but Battersby was quick to close the angles and save for a corner.

Revan got down the left and crossed for Owen-Evans to double Hereford’s lead with a silky flick. Hereford were playing well with Touray presenting McLean with a good opportunity. Haines volleyed just over but it was not long before the third. Tom shot from distance and a defender blocked it, but the ball looped up and over giving keeper Mitchell no chance.

Hereford were rampant with Patten failing to hit the target with two opportunities, and then had a shot blocked when he looked set to score. Blyth got a goal back on the stroke of half time through McNall striking from the left side of the box across Battersby.

Blyth came out seeking to get back into the game but a poor clearance from Mitchell was intercepted by Pinchard. Harry curling the ball into the net to restore the three-goal lead and all but kill off the game. Patten appeared to suffer a nasty injury and Lloyd came on. Touray was taken off and Wright made his debut.

Hereford were in control and Blyth were unable to avoid their sixth consecutive home defeat as they battle relegation.

Man of the match was Tom Owen-Evans with his two goals and all-round play.

A very good, comprehensive victory by the Bulls pushing up to eighth with the chance to battle for a play off place with Chorley, York, and Southport all within reach.

BN would like to thank Andy Walkden for all the pictures used in this report.

Game Plan Executed Said Owen-Evans

Tom Owen-Evans Pictured in 2020

Speaking after Hereford's 4-1 victory at Blyth this afternoon, Tom Owen-Evans, who scored two of the goals, felt that his side's game plan had been executed. The win takes the Bulls closer to the playoff places.

"I think we played really well," said Owen-Evans.

"It's nice to score four goals away from home.

"A long trip so we wanted to start brightly and knock them out as soon as we could and I think we did that.

"The gaffer said he wanted us to start quick so we came out of the blocks quickly and so we did that by scoring three goals in the first half.

"Game plan executed."

Owen-Evans spoke about his second goal.

"I'm not sure if it was the outside or the bottom of my foot. It sort of bounced in front of me so I tried to get a little bit of contact on it and divert it towards goal and thankfully it span away from the keeper off the post and in.

"I saw Seb with the ball, he's getting into really good positions today. I was in the box and I just gambled in the middle of the box and thankfully it's dropped to me and I managed to score.

"They came out (second half) of the blocks first five/ten but we wanted to start the half brightly again but these things happen. Teams are always going to have spells in the game and they were probably going to come out obviously after scoring their goal on half time and give it a good go.

"Pinchard scored a great goal when we were maybe under the cosh a little bit but that sort of killed the game off and then we didn't mean to sit off, they weren't the tactics, it's just when you are 4-1 up away from home you do sit off a bit and protect what you've got.

"The gaffer said after the game that everyone is saying that we've drawn four on the bounce and playoff chances are gone, you read it online, but you look back after winning here today and you say it's a decent point at Kettering, a decent point at Leamington on tough pitches and we've drawn with York who are up there.

"So after winning today you look at it and although you'd like to win the games you are drawing but if you're not losing you are picking up points and teams are dropping points around us. We're two points off the playoffs now.

"So we're amongst it and we fancy we can beat anyone so we've got games left and we can pick up points and we believe we can get in there."

How Was Your Holiday In Skegness?

Towards the end of Hereford manager Josh Gowling's post match interview at Blyth, BBC H&W's Keith Hall asked how was his holiday in Skegness.

Gowling replied with a chuckle.

"I wasn't there much to be honest, I was at the training ground and the ground. I never really got there that much.

"It was nice to get away for a bit with the family, it was good, we needed a little bit of a break.

"I've not been here much because I've been a bit annoyed.

"I've always had focus, I've never not had focus so because I've not been speaking to you guys doesn't mean I'm not focused.

"It just means that sometimes it's nice for someone else to speak instead of me.

"We've got Steve Burr, not just to speak by the way, we've got other people who can talk as well.

"So no the focus has always been there, we've always been working hard, I work hard behind the scenes.

"So I am still here.

"So for those fans who think I've gone, I'm still around don't worry.

"I'm not going anywhere."

We Were Really Clinical Today Said Gowling

After getting back to winning ways at Blyth this afternoon, Hereford manager Josh Gowling gave his reaction to the win.

"We weathered a little bit at the start," said Gowling.

"I thought the first ten minutes they were a decent side, they put pressure on us, they got in good areas.

"Then we probably scored against the run of play to be honest but I just thought we were really clinical in those moments that we've not been of late which is probably why we drawn games, we were really clinical today.

"We looked at them in analysis and we looked at areas we could exploit. We knew their full backs were really expansive so we knew there was lots of space in those areas.

"With Toey and Ryan out there we thought we could get success out there and we did today.

"If you look at the intensity, the pressing, the work-rate, I think that's been there but we probably have not been able to play football because of the elements, because of the pitches, so it was nice today to come here, that's probably the best I've seen it.

"It was nice to get the ball down and play and we did that and you can see how ruthless we can be when we do it."

Harry Pinchard started for Hereford.

"He did really well, he took his goal really well, he's got that creative spark for set plays, his deliveries are excellent.

"That's the squad we've got, when players go we've got players to fill in. I'm really pleased for him because he's been itching to play and he's come in today and given a good performance like that. I'm pleased."

Gowling started Mo Touray up front whilst Mo Faal was left off the team sheet because of the number of loan players especially as Gowling had to bring in a loan keeper because Hall and Sondergaard have Covid.

"He's come in, he did well at Farsley and then he did well against Guiseley at home and then he's dropped off the levels we expect but today with Andre in he's looking over his shoulder.

"He's come in today, he's backed in well, he's been a platform for us to play off today, he's put an absolute shift in today, a really good performance.

"We had to bring in an emergency keeper so we can't have that many players in the squad so looking at it we had to make it that someone had to be sacrificed and it was Mo (Faal) today.

"We had to look at the players who have been playing week in week out, Seb, Keenan who I thought was excellent and outstanding today, he's workrate and his effort."

Gowling was pretty busy yesterday finding a keeper.

"He's (Oliie Battersby) not trained with us, we got him in after I think I made about a thousand phone calls. We've got to thank Grimsby for lending us a keeper. I think he pulled off some good saves in the game today. Really pleased."

Pattern looked to have an injury late in the game.

"It was his elbow, I said to him it's amazing how your legs stop working when you bang your elbow. I don't know if the lad landed on him but he was in pain in the dressing room.

"Hopefully it's a bit of a bump and he'll be fine come next week."

Sodeinde Moves To Redditch

Former Hereford midfielder Victor Sodeinde is on the move.

He's joining Redditch after leaving Banbury.

Now 21 Sodeinde was originally at Hereford on loan from Nottingham Forest during part of the 2019/20 season.

Josh Gowling brought him back to Edgar Street in October 2021 back he only stayed until December when he moved to Banbury.

Big Playing Budgets In The National League

It well known that Hereford's aim is to get back to the Football League. Back in 2006 they won the Conference final and then had two seasons in League Two before promotion to League One.

Whilst Hereford only spent one season in League One, supporters had away games at places like Leeds and Leicester. But, in truth, Hereford's budget could not sustain football at that level and the following season the Bulls were back in League Two.

This season the reformed club are hoping to reach the play-offs in the National North. If they do and then go on to be promoted the football budget will need to increase.

Across the country Dover face relegation from the National League to the National South, which is the same level as Hereford.

And their chairman, Jim Parmenter, feels it could be very difficult to get out of the National South unless there is more investment in his club.

“We have got to compete with the multi-million clubs, we have got to compete with the relegated clubs with the parachute payments and the big crowds so, unless there’s a big investment in Dover, I think it’s going to be very hard for us to get back to the National League.

“To compete in the National League now, you need £3 million to £4 million. The average playing budget in National League South I know is little more than £350,000 to £400,000."

Dover's National League budget was around £700,000.

"But our playing budget in the National League is nowhere near big enough to compete with the big clubs.

“People have to understand that the amount of money that's needed in this league now makes it uncompetitive for teams like Dover.

“You have got teams coming down, two a year, with a £1.5m parachute payment in their back pocket. Some of these bigger clubs are getting 5,000-10,000 crowds.

“They have got big catchment areas, big conurbations around them, and they are taking lots of money. We are working with a crowd, even when we were doing well in the National League, of maybe 1,100.

“We have got a 180-degree catchment area and we have never had a parachute payment in our life which, I think, is probably the biggest evil that’s ever hit football - and certainly the National League.”

Back to Hereford and this week they've launched Squad Budget 2022/23 which hopes to raise at least £50,000 towards the football budget which is currently thought to be around £400,000.

Should be Bulls be promoted then a much bigger budget would be needed just to stay in the National League. Where that money would come from is anybody's guess. The current structure of the club, which will soon be 50% owned by the Supporters Trust, means that further investment could happen through a share issue or similar. But only up to £1,000,000 of shares can be issued under the present articles of association. And no individual can own more than 10% of the club.

And if a decision was taken to increase the share capital would there be enough interest in buying shares in a club which can't be traded?

May be a rethink is required?

Football Should Have Independent Regulator Says PM

A question about the possibility of a football regulator was aired in Parliament on Wednesday.

This from FSF:

Speaking in Parliament this week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given his backing to an independent regulator for football, ahead of his own Government’s official response to the Fan-led Review of Football Governance.Last November’s review was welcomed by sports minister Nigel Huddleston and a formal response from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is expected in the next few weeks.“I do agree with my honourable friend the Member for Chatham and Aylesford (Tracey Crouch), who has just conducted a review on the matter, that we should indeed have an independent regulator for football,” said Johnson in response to a question from Graham Stringer MP at Wednesday’s PMQs.

Bookies Offer 21/20 For Hereford Win At Blyth

Mike Symons Scores For Hereford At Blyth In August 2019

A Tribute To Ivan Hollett

Club Historian Ron Parrott has written the following tribute to Ivan Hollett, former Hereford United player who sadly passed away on Wednesday at the age of 81.

“I remember Ivan joining us in January 1972 at the time of our famous giant killing feats. He was a tall man, had a great physique and certainly looked the part. He was not the bustling type of centre-forward that fans demanded in those days and in truth, he was not a popular figure with supporters, although his record of 10 goals in 33 appearances was just about acceptable. Off the field, I remember him as a very likeable man, always willing to stop for a chat and very keen on helping the youngsters. Sadly, Ivan had been battling dementia for some time and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. RIP Ivan.”

Below is Ron’s pen-pic for Ivan, covering his whole career on and off the field.:-

Born Pinxton, Derbyshire 22nd April 1940, died 23rd March 2022

Ivan first came to notice as a 16-year old with Derbyshire side Somercotes Athletic and he was quickly spotted by Chesterfield. He went to Saltergate for trials in 1956 but was invited to trial for Derby County two months later and he signed amateur forms for them just before his 17th birthday. Ivan played youth football for the Rams, before being given his first taste of pro football with Sutton Town as a part-time professional. Ivan was given his chance in the Football League with Mansfield Town in August 1958, when they signed him for £300.  The Stags were relegated from the old Division Three in 1960/61 and the following season, when he only scored once in nine games, Ivan was the subject of barracking from the home crowd. His nine goals in 19 games in 1961/62, helped them to promotion again but from there on, he only played when someone else was injured. Mansfield accepted a bid from Millwall for him in June 1964 but Ivan turned it down so he stayed where he was until a tragic car accident killed Chesterfield's centre-forward Ralph Hunt and the Spireites paid £1,000 to bring him to Saltergate, having scored 40 League goals in 98 games for Mansfield.

Ivan ended his first season with Chesterfield as joint top scorer with the promise of more to come. In 1965/66, he was averaging a goal every other game until a broken collarbone halted his progress. A managerial change in 1966 saw an upturn in form and Ivan began to attract the scouts again, with the likes of Everton, Manchester City, Stoke City and Aston Villa making polite enquiries. In January 1967, Ivan gave up much of his spare time to run coaching courses at a school in Alfreton and a future career began to take shape. In October 1968, Ivan went on the transfer list at his own request and Crewe came in with an offer of £6,000. His three years with the Railwaymen started off badly, when they suffered relegation to the old Third Division and the following two campaigns were undistinguished. Stoke City did come back in for him at one point but he was injured in the game before he was due to sign and the move fell through. In November 1970, Cambridge United, new to the Football League but struggling to avoid re-election, came in for him in November 1970 and the U’s paid a record £5,000 for his services and he rewarded them by topping their scoring list in 1970/71 and helping them to avoid danger.

Hereford United player-manager Colin Addison paid £2,000 for Ivan in January 1972 but he didn’t prove to be one of Colin’s greatest successes. Ivan had great physique, height, stature, had a distinctive stride and was a good header of the ball and although he featured fleetingly in the opening matches in the Football League, he wasn't able to combine enough of these attributes together at the same time to make an impact. Unfortunately, he was not popular with fans and after scoring 10 times in 33 games, Ivan was released to join Southern League Poole Town in January 1973.

He later moved to South Africa to play for Durban United before returning to the UK as player-coach to Poole Town. Ivan then moved on to become player-manager with Alfreton Town in 1975. The Reds won the Midland League under his guidance in 1976/77, then along with co-manager John Harrison, he repeated the feat at Belper Town in 1976/77. Ivan then undertook management and coaching roles with several other Nottinghamshire non-league sides before returning to the full-time game as a scout and coach to Mansfield Town's youth team. In 2010, he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his services to Mansfield Town and after 23 years with the Stags, he joined Derby County's backroom staff under the then manager Nigel Clough. .Ivan loved to watch non-league football in the area and after retirement, he became a sales rep for local firms involved in the mining and metals' industries. He eventually retired to live in Riddings in Derbyshire, until ill-health and dementia led to move into a nursing home, where he sadly passed away in March 2022.

Gowling Talks About His New Signing

In a video interview on BBC Hereford and Worcester, Josh Gowling talks about his latest signing Andre Wright who has joined the Bulls after leaving AFC Telford.

"We've brought a number nine in, he trained with us (yesterday)," said the Hereford manager.

"He'll be ready for the weekend.

"To be fair he hasn't be playing at his club, people will probably think it's an odd signing but we looked at him stats wise, we looked at what he will bring to the team, something a bit different.

"He's got a lot of energy, holds the ball up well, so from our point of view we probably don't have that in the team.

"Miles is out for a period of time, we got big Mo and little Mo but he's probably a bit more rugged than those two.

"He's not got the height of Jaanai but he's definitely as physical as him and he's quick when he gets going, he's good with his back to play and he will link things up.

"We're happy we've got him in, it's up to him now to prove that it's worth being here. He hasn't been playing at his last club.

"It's his job now to come here, train and impress to get in the team."

Maz who?

It’s the longest away trip of the season for Hereford FC this Saturday as they trek up to Croft Park, Blyth, for a very winnable-looking National League North fixture. The coach will be having snow chains fitted as I type (by which I mean the team bus rather than Josh Gowling), and the players will be having fur lining inserted into their shirts. Fake fur, of course.

The long journey is obviously a right faff and won’t make the assignment easy, but this looks like a good opportunity for the Bulls to get their season back on track.

Their record against Saturday’s hosts gives great cause for optimism - five wins from five meetings, including a 2-0 win at Edgar Street during that golden month of November when Ryan McLean was making NLN defenders’ lives thoroughly miserable. Goals from him and Dan Smith, Smith’s a blistering finish, secured the points that evening.

For Spartans, midfielder JJ O’Donnell has done very well to grab 11 league goals this season in a struggling team. However, their recent form is, basically, the worst in the league. They’ve lost five in a row at home, leaving them just three points clear of bottom-of-the-table Guiseley, having played two games more. They’re now fighting for their lives, and as such could be a tricky proposition, but presumably they’ve felt that they’ve been fighting for their lives for a few weeks, in which time they’ve mostly been losing, so perhaps they’re just not very good at fighting for their lives, and as such aren’t a tricky proposition after all.

The last of those home defeats was a 3-1 loss to Bradford PA, but before that they did manage to beat Chorley away 1-0. However, it’s that abject home form that the Bulls will want to focus, and capitalise, on.

Certainly Hereford couldn’t wish for a better opportunity to finally pick up that elusive win and keep themselves handily placed on the edge of the play-offs. With four points from their last six games, it’s quite remarkable that they’re still right there, but with most teams in the middle of the table regularly losing, those recent Bulls draws haven’t been as damaging as they should have been. One of the clubs in that cluster will surely put a winning run together soon, and despite the various injuries and untimely departures that have contributed to this recent poor run, that club could well be Hereford FC. There’s also now a huge added incentive, that of York City. To finish above them would now, in light of their recent signing, be very sweet indeed, and they’re a tantalising target in seventh place.

It does feel like there have been a number of setbacks recently which must have dented the morale of the management team and their charges, not least Miles Storey’s injury on Tuesday, which will presumably keep him out for a few weeks. If the squad can use any sense of injustice or adversity that may exist in the dressing room as a galvanising force for good, all the better.

On a positive note, Ryan Lloyd, James Vincent and Jared Hodgkiss could be back in contention for this one, and would give the side some solidity and worldlywiseness (yes that’s a word if bouncebackability is). New striker Andre Wright looks on face value to be a little bit of a curious arrival, given that he’s coming from a Telford team that’s struggled all season, and hasn’t been notably prolific in his career to date. However, Josh Gowling may have seen something in him that will work alongside a Mo or two, and Jaanai Gordon’s record was similarly unconvincing and journeymanish before he came to Edgar Street, and he was turned into a decent player by the Gowling-Burr partnership, not that he showed much gratitude. Wright is a similar age to Gordon, and if Josh and Steve can get the form he showed at Bohemians in Ireland out of him (a goal in every two games), the Bulls could have a chance of hitting that two-points-a-game target they need to get into the play-offs. The only trouble Is, if he turns out to be a goal machine he’ll be off to York or Brackley or some other bigger club than Hereford like Leicester flipping Nirvana faster than you can say worldlywiseness. Or bouncebackability.

Following some uncertainty surrounding Dinesh Gillela’s absence on Tuesday evening, the 3-5-2/5-3-2 experiment could be persisted with here, particularly if Captain H isn’t quite ready to take back control of the ship’s wheel yet, but if he is back a lesser-spotted 4-4-2 could be on the cards with a Faal-Wright partnership up front looking possible, and hopefully profitable.

This one’s nailed on – three points finally to make the long journey back a little more tolerable and to give the home match next Saturday against a very, very average Alfreton side with absolutely nothing to play for a good deal more meaning. Back-to-back wins would really put the bull among the pigeons.
