'Meet the Chairman' Q&A - Key points

Andrew Graham

Andrew Graham was at Radford's tonight for a 'Meet the Chairman' discussion. He answered a lot of questions regarding the club - both on and off the pitch, as did other directors and Head of Football Tim Harris. Below were some of the talking points...

ON THE TEAM

Tim Harris was there and talked about the football side. Harris says the club has come a long way and fans should be aware of the recruitment. When he took over the club, a lot of loans came in because 'sometimes you've got to beg and borrow'. Talking about players recently signed, they have been scouted and Luke Brick analyses strengths and weaknesses. He said the team looked in great shape and physically fit at training last night. There is a good mix of experience at the club (like Martin Riley and Reece Styche). Harris says fans will love Jacob Jagger Cane, who he says was Weston-Super-Mare's best player last season. Harris says 20 will be an ideal number as regards how many players he wants. It is unlikely Danny Greenslade will play any part of the opening two months of the season.

Harris says he is relishing taking the club forward and has been in this position before; transforming a club from part to full time football. Chairman Andrew Graham says he is confident Harris and Marc Richards can take the club forward, but they are aware 'it's a results-based business' and it's important they are where they need to be by Christmas time.

RICHARDS, O'SULLIVAN & SMITH

Eliot Richards requires an operation on Monday, but is a non-contract player. Therefore, he will wait until he has had it to see where he is. Lance Smith also requires an operation; however Tommy O'Sullivan has signed on for next season.

BUDGET

Tim Harris says there is a lot of speculation regarding the figure and is not working on a £600-700k budget. There is an increase in budget, but is not the highest in the league. He is talking about 'value for money' players.

ON WHEN CLUB WILL GO FULL-TIME

Andrew Graham said that, when the time is right, the funding will be available but won't be at the expense of the security of Hereford FC. He added that all board members will have to agree when the club will go full time and discussions have already taken place, even before he became a member on the board.

George Webb added further details. He said the club have got a Head of Football with a Head Coach because every club that have gone full time that Hereford spoke to have got someone who looks for the best players etc. A manager will have to do everything otherwise.

ON HANDLING CRITICISM

Andrew Graham: "It hurts that fans criticise you as an individual. People have to get on board and nobody likes to play at Edgar Street when we're on form. When we are together, people don't want to play Hereford. People chipping away on the side will be responsible for any demise."

ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Andrew Graham says he'll talk to every fan, and there will be no football club without fans, but because he's so busy and wants to move the club forward, he hasn't got time for people who just want to chip away,

ON PREVIOUS CHAIRMAN KEN KINNERSLEY
Andrew Graham says previous Chairman Ken Kinnersley did a lot of work.

"If people's perceptions that Ken was not as forthcoming, I think they have to put that down to people's individual expectations," he said.

"I have already been approachable. But we should have a sense of gratitude for everything Ken has done so far. I have nothing but praise for Ken." There was a round of applause after Andrew made those remarks.

HARD WORK

Andrew Graham says he was surprised by the amount of work that the previous HUST nominated directors did, added that they put in between 20 to 30 hours a week, according to Graham. Graham says being Chairman is an honour and a challenge. He  says he has one job to do and if he fails, he will go back to the terraces - but it won't be for the lack of trying.

"If we are unable to deliver, then it is down to me because I'm the Chairman."

ON 'DODSY' NICKNAME

Andrew Graham was previously in the Army and, he was told off after coming back from an operation. So he went to the hairdressers and told the barber to shave off around the beret as a joke. One the parade square, someone shouted 'Ken Dodd' to him as his hair fell out of his beret. So he was subsequently nicknamed 'Dodsy'. A number of you may have seen that nickname on social media, which Andrew is very active on.

SEASON TICKETS

The 1,000th season ticket has been sold.

SEASON TICKET PRICES

Director Peter Churchus said the board wanted to increase the playing budget; therefore that meant season prices - including ones for younger supporters - went up.

SCAFFOLDING

The scaffolding at the front of the club office will be dismantled on August 23. One fan labelled it 'an eyesore'.

RELATIONSHIPS

Andrew Graham: "Over the last season, there had been a lot of fractions; we are on a certain path and won't have time to engage with people being negative. They need to offer constructive criticisms with solutions."

He later said that HFC is some people's community; and pays tribute to long-term volunteer Jenny Prosser and ardent supporter Pat Hornsby; both of whom have recently passed away.

BARS

Commercial Director George Webb says there simply isn't the footfall to open the bars in the day and pubs generally are struggling. He added that some groups use Addison's in the day, but not for drinking. Renting them out provides guaranteed income, he said.

SPONSORSHIP

George Webb says it's all about the partnership and what value they offer the club in terms of the brand, not just hard cash.

BLACKFRIARS DEVELOPMENT

Andrew Graham says everything is still on schedule and is looking forward to a positive outcome, adding that it's imperative to have a four-sided stadium.

ACADEMY

Paul Quarrell, Head of Academy, says new Head Coach Andy Bevan is a very experienced coach. It's early days but he brings a wealth of experience to the job. George Webb added that the club have got to produce their own players if the club wants to go full time. And that, Webb says, is one of the jobs that Andy Bevan has got to do.

Aston Villa U23s to come to Edgar Street

Hereford have confirmed that their final pre-season friendly will be against Aston Villa U23s.

The match will be at Edgar Street on Saturday, July 27 (3pm).

Experienced Football League player joins York

Experienced defender Steve McNulty has joined York City.

The 35-year-old made 27 appearances for Tranmere Rovers last season in a side that gained promotion to League One.

In a career spanning more than 600 games, McNulty has won six promotions at four different clubs.

York are the bookmakers' favourites to win National League North.

Edwards starts as Cardiff Met lose first leg; Lam comes off bench

Joel Edwards started for Cardiff Metropolitan University as they went down 1-0 to FC Progrès Niederkorn in the first leg of their Europa League Preliminary Round match.

Meanwhile, Jordan Lam - who was at Hereford last season - came off the bench following his return to Cardiff Met.

The second leg at Cardiff is next Thursday.

Another player joins Hereford

Jordan Nicholson is the latest player to join Hereford.
Nicholson, described as an attack-minded player who can excite fans, joins from Darlington and has previously played for Peterborough and Barnet.
“He’s got a good left foot and can play anywhere in that attacking midfield role," said Hereford Head Coach Marc Richards, as reported on the club's official website.
Last season, Nicholson, who is 26, was Darlington's top scorer, netting 11 goals.
“I had a chat with Rico and Tim [Harris], came down to the training ground, had a look around the place and just spoke about the clubs ambitions and goals, it went really well," said Nicholson.
“Rico told me where the club wants to be, and that was a really good selling point to me. It was clear that promotion is the big ambition here, and that suits me. I want to compete, I want to do well and I want to win.”

Tributes to much loved volunteer

Tributes have been paid to Jenny Prosser, a much loved volunteer who sold programmes 'in her spot' at Edgar Street for 52 years.

Jenny - who passed away earlier this month - rarely missed a game, often cutting holidays short to ensure she was back in time to sell programmes and watch Hereford.

Jenny Prosser was presented with a signed shirt in 2013 from Colin Addison and Grenville Smith
Paying tribute on the club's official website, Chairman Andrew Graham said:

“Jenny had a fantastic sense of humour and her smiling face on match days will be greatly missed. I was lucky enough to spend some time with her in hospital and her passion and love for the club was abundantly clear.

“On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to pass on our condolences to her family and friends at this sad time.”

Jenny's funeral will be held at Hereford Crematorium at 1.30pm on Wednesday, July 10. Hereford fans are welcome to attend to pay their respects.

To allow office staff to attend the funeral, the club office shop will close at 12.30pm on the
day of the funeral.

* Jenny can be seen in this video marking the 25 year reunion of the Hereford United Giantkilling side from around the 40 second mark.

Players will be back in training tonight ahead of the 2019/2020 season.

As well as the 14 players signed on, it is expected that some trialists will also be at Hartpury as Tim Harris and Marc Richards shape up their squad.

Sunday, July 14: Bideford (a)

The second match of the 'Devon weekender'; Bideford finished 9th in Southern League Division One South last season.

The first home match of pre-season sees League Two side Cheltenham Town come to Edgar Street. The Robins finished 16th last season.

Saturday, July 20: Ludlow (a)

Another local trip for Hereford. Ludlow have had troubled times in the past, having folded and subsequently reformed. The Shropshire side now play in West Midlands League Division Two, where they finished 6th last season.

Wednesday, July 24: Wolves U23 (h)

This match is part of Ryan Green's testimonial. Wolves have a Europa League qualifying match the next night, but Green is hopeful that one or two players from the first team squad may come down for the game.

Saturday, July 27: TBC (h)

Hereford's last friendly will be a week before the new season starts. However, the opponents have yet to be confirmed.

Weston duo join Hereford

Hereford have signed two players from Weston-Super-Mare.
Jacob Jagger Cane, aged 25, has been described as a combative midfielder, while Jason Pope, 23, can play across a number of positions in defence and midfield.
“Some people have referred to Jacob as one of the best pressers in the central midfield area, but he also comes with a lot of quality and pops up with goals," said Hereford Head Coach Marc Richards, as reported on the club's official website.
Talking about fellow new signing Pope, Richards added: “We’ve known about Jason for a few seasons, he’s got a lot of versatility, he can play centre back, right back, centre midfield, or even higher up the pitch.”

Attacking midfielder linked with Bulls

Former Forest Green Rovers player Fabien Robert has been linked with a summer move to Hereford.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder was on loan at Gloucester City last season, scoring 10 goals in 23 games. His strike against Truro City was named 'Goal of the Season' at the National Game Awards.

Robert was released by Forest Green at the end of last season.

Sainty goes back to Barry

Callum Sainty - who played for Hereford under Pete Beadle last season - has gone back to Barry Town.

The 23-year-old joined the Bulls from the Welsh side last summer, but failed to make an impression and left in November.

Barry face Cliftonville in a two-legged Europa League Preliminary Round tie after finishing third in the Welsh Premier League last season.

The first leg is this Thursday.

Davies signs for Hereford

Rhys Davies has joined Hereford from Shrewsbury Town.

The left-back, who is the son of former Bulls defender Gareth Davies, told the official Hereford FC website that it will be a dream come true to walk out at Edgar Street and he can't wait to get started.

“I’m coming here to play; just because I’m a young boy, some people might think I’m not going to play every week, but my aim is to be the best player every single week," he said.

"I want to be playing week in week out, I want to be having massive impacts on games.”

Davies - who was part of a number of Hereford youth teams before joining Shrewsbury as a scholar - played nearly 30 games last season on loan at Chippenham and Nuneaton.

Hereford Head Coach Marc Richards added that Davies has got a great career ahead of him and has already amassed a decent amount of games at this level.

HUST Warmly Welcomes The New Appointments to HFC Board

This from HUST...

HUST warmly welcomes the recent new appointments on the HFC board; Andrew Graham who has been appointed Chairman, and new Club Director Helen Byard.

“Andrew is the first HUST Nominated Director to hold the role of Club Chairman on a permanent basis” says HUST Chairman, Richard Tomkins, – so it’s a significant moment for the Trust.”

“I appreciate the opportunity that HUST has provided me, to become a Nominated Director and represent HUST Members and the wider fan base” says Andrew. “As the first HUST Nominated Director Chairman of HFC, I hope that we can feed off the Club's appetite to work as one and all get behind what we are trying to achieve as a Club, pushing forward towards success. Who knows, being stronger together could just give us the nudge towards the Conference and onto the Football League, that we all deserve!”

Andrew was nominated to the Club board by the Trust in 2018. “This was the first time the Trust recruited and selected Club board members via a process agreed by, and open to all HUST members, so it’s pleasing that one of our first appointments has worked out so well” explains HUST Vice Chair, Joanie Roberts. “Andrew is a passionate supporter who has the interests of the Club and supporters firmly at heart and we look forward to working closely with him in further developing the relationship between the Club and the Trust.   We also welcome Helen Byard onto the HFC Board - the Club’s first female Director. I’ve not had the pleasure of meeting Helen yet but I’m sure she will bring something new to the HFC boardroom.”

HUST recruits for Nominated Director positions on an annual basis, with one HND position up for reappointment each year.

Hereford 22-1 to win league with some bookies

Hereford's odds of winning the National League North for the 2019/20 season are as high as 22-1 with some bookmakers.

Both Betfair and Paddy Power have those prices listed on oddschecker.com, while Bet365 have the Bulls as 14-1 and Bet Victor, 16-1.

All three bookies have York as favourites, with Chester also being fancied.

Fire at Brackley Town

A fire broke out at the home of Brackley Town in the early hours of this morning.

The Saints say that the main clubhouse building has been destroyed following the blaze that happened at around 3am.

"Obviously this is a very traumatic time for everyone at the club and all involved," said Chairman Francis Oliver in a statement.

"We do believe that  the football side of the business will be able to operate without too much upheaval as we hope the changing room block has not been affected. Also we believe that the new build has not been damaged and this could be up and running within 6 to 8 weeks. We will make a further statement once we have been able to gain access to the site to assess the situation and the issues we will be dealing with."

Bird signs for Merthyr

Jamie Bird
Jamie Bird has singed for Merthyr Town.

The 21-year-old joined Hereford in September 2017, helping the side to the Southern Premier League title.

He then started last season well, famously scoring a late winner in a 2-1 win over Leamington. But the Welsh midfielder failed to establish himself in the side and was released last October.

Tweeting about his move to Merthyr, Bird said:

can’t wait to get back playing & enjoying my football 👌🏽⚽️

Hereford United Reunion - Interviews with Jon Narbett, Ian Benbow and Peter Isaac

Players and staff from the 1988 to 1992 era reminisced over their time at Hereford during a reunion event last night.

It was organised by Matt Healey at Yates, Hereford, with former players including Jon Narbett, Stewart Phillips, Gary Stevens, Paul Wheeler, Peter Heritage, Ian Benbow, Ian McLoughlin, Paul Maddy, Kevin Rose, Richard Jones and Shane Jones. Backroom staff included John Layton, Colin Taylor and Peter Isaac.

Narbett, who now lives in Chicago, USA, said it was lovely to meet up with everyone.

"My memories change over the years because it's only when the time has passed that you reflect more on your experiences at the club. And for me, Hereford is my club," said Narbett, who played more than 100 times for Hereford and was part of the team that faced Manchester United in the FA Cup in 1990.

Jon Narbett
"I started off at Shrewsbury, then was a record signing for Hereford in 1988.

"I had four seasons here and lived in the area, and had fabulous memories.

"So seeing all the players here brings it all back."

Benbow, who scored the winning goal against Wrexham in the Welsh Cup Final at Cardiff Arms Park, said Hereford will always hold a special place in his heart.

Ian Benbow
"Because I was local, I ended up playing with all my friends that I grew up with and they have turned up tonight, people I went to school with," he said.

Isaac, meanwhile, served under nine managers in various capacities, after joining Hereford in 1960.

"When I joined Hereford, it was a family-run club, so once I finished playing and went on the other side, I tried to keep it that way," said Isaac.

Peter Isaac
"So all the lads came in, I tried to treat them as I was treated because Hereford United was one of the best non-league clubs going at the time and they've done brilliantly over the years.

"All these lads wanted to come to Hereford because they knew they were coming to a good club and were well looked after.

"Everything was done properly and had the best of everything."

Graham Aims To Drive Hereford Forward

Andrew Graham With Reg Reynolds
Andrew Graham hopes that becoming chairman of Hereford FC will allow him to drive the club forwards.

"I saw it as a brilliant opportunity to try and make a bit of a difference and put my drive and determination into pushing Hereford forward," he told the Hereford Times.

"We have to remember that it isn't just about the Saturday every fortnight, it is a community and I think that's where the hurt sometimes comes in a little bit more at Hereford when they perform the way everybody doesn't want us to perform.

"For me the fans are the strongest asset of the club, the infrastructure is strong enough to make us a sustainable force going forwards.

"When I was presented with this amazing opportunity the first thing I thought about was what infrastructure is there.

"Was I taking on a poison chalice or setting myself up to fail? Hereford FC has a fantastic infrastructure and has been built well from the ground up.

"The main responsibility is that I along with the rest of the board are responsible for making the people that turn up and watch the football club smile.

"I'm responsible for the exiles being able to listen on the radio and think 'that's my club'.

"I don't people not look forward to Saturday. As a fan I punch the air when we score and feel the hurt when we lose.

"I do exactly the same now as do the other directors. What I have now is the position of responsibility where I can help deliver what the fans require as what I had before was a position of being able to assist.

"Now it's my job to drive forward the brilliant strategy we have as a football club. The directors that have been involved since the start of this new entity Hereford FC have solid foundations in place and a brilliant business plan and they have got a strategy for the next five years.

"My job as chairman is make sure we don't deviate away from that strategy. If it fails ultimately it's not the other directors that will be at fault for that it will be me."

Nine Years Ago David Keyte Became Chairman Of Hereford United

David Keyte
In the week that Hereford FC has appointed a new chairman BN looks back to June 4th 2010 when David Keyte became chairman of Hereford United.

David Keyte has been named as the new Chairman of Hereford United at today's press conference. Tim Russon is the new Vice Chairman.

Keyte was a footballer with the club's reserve side in the 1970's, and has up to this summer been principal at Bredon School, just outside of Tewkesbury. He has an interest in ID Sports, a sportswear firm based in Malvern.

Russon spent several years as Head of Sport for ITV Central News South. His website offers his services currently as a film producer for promotional and broadcast work.

Speaking to the press conference, Keyte said they would be assisted by Joan Fennessey for a few weeks to aid the transition. They will continue the development of the Blackfriars End, with the completion not expected until the end of the 2010/11 season.

The managerial appointment will be their top priority. A new request for applications was made at the start of the week and a three man shortlist has been compiled from more than 30 applicants. They aim for a top ten finish for the coming season and are looking for a more experienced manager considering their own lack of experience in football.

The pair want to talk to the community and take on board ideas for the club. They are open to suggestions and offers of assistance.

Keyte spoke about how he bought Hereford United

"Hereford born and bred. Had a bit of a flirtation (with the club) when Colin Addison signed me on as a Cathedral schoolboy and didn't quite make it. 1963 my dad brought me here... it's like a dream come true for me. Living the dream.

"I've had a bit of luck in business, got a place out in Barbados. I got off a flight at the end of April, bought the Hereford Times and saw 'the Bulls up for sale' and I thought this is it. I visited my father in Tillington, walked through the door and asked him if he'd seen it - 'I said to your mother if David sees that... and if he's got any money left...'

"We (he and Tim Russon) got together in the last two months. We'd come at it from seperate angles. Joan Fennessey put us together. Delighted with the early workings. I'm an accountant, and will be continuing on the prudence that Graham (Turner) has set for this club. I might be the hard nose businessman, quiet but determined, but I think we've got a nice marriage here that Tim is the communication/TV guy that can get things moving to the community.

"This is no criticism of Graham and co, but we feel that there is an opening to perhaps get the football club back to the Hereford people in some fashion."

Hereford United Reunion - Massive Thank You

Big thank you to everybody who came down tonight. The event was a huge success. New Hereford FC Chairman Andrew Graham was in attendance, as the players remembered old times.  The photographs will be published in the next couple of days.

Pictured* Peter Heritage and Jon Narbett

Andrew Graham - Supporter Since 1972

Hereford FC have appointed Andrew Graham as their new chairman.

Graham had a long career in the armed forces and various police roles, including a spell working for the Home Office. Now he is a director of ODOS Business Solutions, a management consultancy company.

He is also a director of four other related companies.

55 year old Graham lives in Worcester and has been Hereford fan since 1972. He was a co-founder of HUISA in the 1990s and a HUST member since 2017. He is a keen competitor in endurance events where he has raised funds for cancer and military veterans charities.

Graham was co-opted by HUST as an external director in May 2017.

"I am honoured and feel privileged to have been co-opted onto the Board of HUST," he said at the time."

Then yesterday he was voted in as the new chairman of Hereford FC.

"When I was young, I wanted to become a professional footballer. I followed Hereford United home and away until it went out of existence.

"From those days to this, I punch the air when we win and feel the hurt when we don’t perform. These emotions act as poignant reminders of what Hereford means to me and what football at Edgar Street means to its fans and community."

Graham is also a director of Pegasus Juniors Football Club and of Community Hereford - Pegasus FC Limited. He was appointed to both posts last April.

Hereford United Reunion - Tonight at 7pm - Free Entry at Yates

Looking forward to tonight's reunion. I will be at Yates from around 6pm. If you're coming straight from work you can purchase food from the venue. Tonight is Burger night so plenty of decent deals. Lots of parking nearby behind the back of the bus station, or by Gaol Street. It should be a brilliant night of remembering the Football League Days. We pretty much have the whole pub, but there will be a sound system set up in the corner on the right hand side.
