News Round Up

Hartlepool are giving a trial to veteran striker Geoff Horsfield after his wage demands scuppered a deal at Cheltenham. He is also being chased by Chesterfield, Luton, and Kettering according to press reports. Huddersfield are to sign the 'non-league Peter Crouch' in 6ft 6in forward Tom Denton from Wakefield for an undisclosed fee after beating Blackburn for his signature.

Chester's dismal start to the season has cost assistant boss Huw Griffiths his job after just a week of the season. The 31 year old was alleged to be at the centre of a dressing room argument at half time on Tuesday night. The local paper also reports that Chester are again near the salary cap rules and are looking to offload players to sign striker Eddie Johnson.

Cheltenham boss Keith Downing has denied a move for ex-Bull Stuart Fleetwood and Charlton colleague Dean Sinclair: "No deal will be done today or for the foreseeable future.". It is understood that Downing has used his budget up on the signings of Barry Hayles and Jennison Myrie-Williams. Scunthorpe have signed goalkeeper Sam Slocombe from Bottesford Town. He is the fourth keeper registered with the Irons.

Tranmere chief Lorraine Rogers is to quit the club at the end of the season after ten years at the helm. She will sell her 30% share of the club after becoming disillusioned at the state of the game below the Premier League: "Points deductions distort competition and alienate fans from the game. They don't address the root of the problem - which is the fact that although English football is very wealthy, too little is being channelled to the smaller clubs. I hate what is happening to our national game below the Premier League."
