Ale In a Day's Work

Award-winning local business, Wye Valley Brewery, have been able to improve their operations following the award of a Marches Building Investment Grant (MBIG) from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via Herefordshire Council.

Wye Valley Brewery

Since 1985, family-owned Wye Valley Brewery have been producing cask, keg and bottle beers using quality ingredients sourced from local farms.

The brewery was started by ex-Guinness brewer, Peter Amor, using the outbuildings of a small rural pub to brew his first beers.   Fast forward nearly 35 years, Wye Valley Brewery is now brewing and delivering more than 12 million pints a year to 1,200 pubs, restaurants and bars throughout the West Midlands and South Wales.

Relocating the brewery in 2001, to the former Symonds Cider site in Stoke Lacy, started a decade of investment and expansion to cope with the business’ growing demands.   This included a bottling line in 2009 to take advantage of demand from supermarkets and wholesalers, and then a new brewhouse in 2013, to increase brewing capacity.  However, with double the beer being produced, the brewery needed to be able to store and deliver more.

Grant funding

Marches Building Investment Grant (MBIG) funding of £100k from the ERDF has enabled Wye Valley Brewery to extend an existing building at the rear of their 9-acre site, providing much-needed additional storage at optimum temperatures and multi-level loading bays to maximise the brewery’s distribution of its products. The new facilities also allow the consolidation of cask washing/filling operations and storage in one building, improving efficiency and safety.

The works were completed in December 2018 and have created 5 additional jobs to date.

Vernon Amor, Managing Director of Wye Valley Brewery, said: “We are delighted to have completed our latest significant investment at Wye Valley Brewery with assistance from the Marches Building Investment Grant Scheme, care of the ERDF. Our new building improves our efficiency and helps towards our ‘green’ goals. For the first time, we’ve our cask-washing, filling, storing and loading bays under one roof, as well as additional roof space to increase our solar PV installations.”

Cllr Trish Marsh, Cabinet Member for Environment, Economy and Skills, said: “The council are delighted to have been able to allocate Marches Building Investment Grant funding to allow Wye Valley Brewery to continue to flourish. It is one of our priorities to support the growth of our local economy and it is wonderful to see a local business continue to expand, attracting investment, creating jobs, and providing the county with a range of delicious beverages!”

ERDF funds are nearly fully committed in Herefordshire, but the council is bidding for more funds and hopes to continue the scheme for a further three years.

If you are interested in applying for funding please contact 01432 260662. Any businesses and community groups can explore the range of funding and grant options available in the county at www.herefordshire.gov.uk/funding

HFA Introduce 'Sin Bins'

This from the HFA:

SIN BINS TO BE INTRODUCED ACROSS GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL IN HEREFORDSHIRE FROM 2019/20 SEASON

· Temporary dismissals – also known as ‘sin bins’ – will be introduced across all levels of grassroots in Herefordshire football from next season

· Player dissent will result in a temporary dismissal from the pitch

· The decision follows a successful pilot phase, which saw a 38% reduction in dissent

The Football Association has today announced that temporary dismissals, also known as sin bins, will be introduced across all levels of grassroots football in Herefordshire from the start of the 2019/20 season.

The mandatory rule change will be implemented up to Step 5 of the National League System and Tier 3 and below in women's football. Sin bins of 10 minutes will be issued by referees as a sanction for dissent in adult football, and will apply to all levels of grassroots football. Shorter sin bins will apply across youth football.

The FA successfully piloted sin bins during the 2017/18 season, and then extended this to a total of 31 leagues throughout the 2018/19 season as part of its commitment to improve the match day experience for all. After gathering positive feedback from players, referees and coaches, sin bins will now be rolled out across all leagues at grassroots level in a bid to increase participation and to continue improving match day experiences.

Leamington captain axed 'after breaking teammate's nose'

Leamington captain Tony Breeden has been released by the club after he reportedly broke teammate Jack Edwards' nose following a training ground bust-up.

Edwards was forced to sit out Saturday’s friendly win over West Bromwich Albion Under-23s, while Breeden’s place in goal was taken by trialist.

A statement reads: “The club can confirm that goalkeeper and captain Tony Breeden has left the club following an incident at training last week.
“We have mutually agreed the termination of his contract with Tony accepting that his conduct fell well short of accepted behaviour.
“He leaves the Brakes after three spells at the club in which he has amassed close to 300 appearances.”
Meanwhile, Breeden tweeted: “Officially left Leamington, not how I wanted to but down to my poor actions.
“Good luck in the future and sorry to fans, staff and players who I’ve (let) down. I know you all held me in high regard and the support I received literally weekly from you all made me feel so proud to represent your club. Good luck.”

New Pegasus Pitch Starting To Take Shape

The new pitch at Hereford Pegasus FC is starting to take shape.

The first strip of carpet was laid this morning.

Bulls sign former Boreham Wood striker

Hereford have signed striker Bradley Ash after he was on trial at the club.

The 23-year-old was most recently at Boreham Wood, scoring five goals in 28 appearances last season.

Ash - who was on trial at Yeovil earlier this summer - also played for Barnsley and Weston-Super-Mare.

He earned his move to Barnsley after scoring 14 goals in 14 games for Weston in his debut season in Conference South.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started,” Ash told the official Hereford FC website.

“I’ve been on trial at a couple of professional clubs but as soon as Hereford showed an interest I was really keen to get the deal done."

“I’ve known Rico for a while and so he didn’t have to sell the club too much to me, but I’m really excited by his ideas and his ambition for the coming season. Everyone at the club wants to be challenging at the right end of the table and that really excites me.”

Ash was an unnamed trialist during Saturday's win over Aston Villa Under-23s, playing around 55 minutes in the match.

Head Coach Marc Richards added: “It’s great to be able to strengthen our attacking options by bringing Brad on board.

“He gives us a different dynamic in the final third and again raises the competition for places.

“Brad has already proven himself in the league above with Boreham Wood and we are delighted to have secured his signature.”

Meanwhile before deciding to sign for Hereford, Ash had been on trial at Yeovil and Newport County according to Ciderspace.

'Ash played in Yeovil's pre-season friendlies against Stratford Town and Hereford, which included him scoring the winning goal in the 90th minute of that game against the club he's now signed for. He then went on to trial for Newport County, scoring against Welsh side Undy AFC and also Bath City. '

And his goal against Hereford.

'The trialist, Bradley Ash, beat two players to drill the ball past Brandon Hall on the edge of the area.'

Ex-Westfields player joins Gloucester

Alex Hainault - who was at Westfields last season - has become the 10th new face at Gloucester City after impressing during pre-season.

The Canadian midfielder played college football in the United States with Saint Francis University before starring for Swedish sides Ytterhogdal IK and Gimo IF FK

The 28-year-old then moved to the UK to further his education at Hartpury College and linked up with Westfields.

Hainault was part of the Westfields side that reached the first round of the FA Cup in 2017.

York 9/2 To Win National North

York City remain favourites to win the National North League title this season.

Currently they are 9/2

Chester are second favourites at 9/1 with Spennymoor, who travel to Edgar Street next Saturday, at 10/1.

Atrincham and Brackley are both 12/1.

Then several clubs including Hereford at 20/1.

Spennymoor Tickets On Sale From Tomorrow

Tickets for Hereford's first National North League game of the season next Saturday, August 3rd, go on sale tomorrow (Monday). As ever they will be available both online and through the club shop. More details at https://www.herefordfc.co.uk/

The fixture against Spennymoor Town, who finished fourth last season but were knocked out of the play-offs, is expected to attract a reasonable crowd despite some supporters being on holiday.

The date is thought to be the earliest start to a season for Hereford for many years.

Yesterday Spennymoor were defeated by Harrogate 4-0. Former Bull James Roberts was in the Spennymoor starting eleven. Meanwhile Hereford defeated Aston Villa Under 23's 1-0.

Last season the corresponding fixture took place on September 29th. Hereford lost 3-0 in front of 2159.

Callum Sainty was sent off on 25 minutes.

'Manager' Ryan Green said afterwards that there were no positives from the game.

"A bad day at the office, to go one-nil down to an individual error and then going down to ten men just killed us off to be honest," said Green."

Second Half Pictures From Villa Friendly

A selection of pictures from the second half of Hereford's friendly against Aston Villa's Under 23's.

First Half Pictures From Villa Friendly

A selection of pictures from the first half of this afternoon's friendly against Aston Villa which Hereford won 1-0.

Average of 658 watch home friendlies

Only 625 fans watched Hereford's final pre-season friendly this afternoon against an Aston Villa Under-23 side.

It was the lowest attendance for this year's home friendlies, with 648 and 701 turning up for the Cheltenham and Wolves Under-23 matches respectively; the latter probably boosted due to it being Ryan Green's testimonial.

Of course, there are a number of facts as to why they were low, such as that everyone has to pay (a lot of fans felt £10 for an adult ticket was too steep), it's the summer holidays and friendlies traditionally don't whet many people's appetite. The fact that two of the games were against Under-23 sides may also have turned a lot of people off from going.

In comparison, this time last year, 804 watched the match against Cardiff U23s, while a very healthy 1,521 turned up the previous week for the game against Newport; albeit the attendance was swelled by 467 visiting supporters. The lowest attendance last year was 624 for a mid-week encounter against Forest Green.

The final pre-season friendly in 2017 - against Stourbridge - saw an attendance of 1,025, while the last friendlies in 2016 and 2015 saw crowds of 1,371 (versus Merthyr) and 1,118 (versus Hull U21s) respectively.

'Massive Headache' About Selection For Opening Game Said Richards

Back from a short break, Hereford FC head coach Marc Richards was pleased with the performance of his team against Aston Villa this afternoon and admitted he would have a 'massive headache' deciding who to start next Saturday against Spennymoor.

Whilst three players didn't take any part in the friendly, Rowan Liburd and Simeon May both carrying slight injuries and Josh Gowling said to be a wedding, nineteen had some minutes at least.

"It was a really good test," said Richards.

"A really good workout a week away from the start of the season.

"I thought they shifted the ball extremely well, it felt realistic in terms of a competitive league game and I think the boys would have got through some serious mileage today.

"Really pleased to get a positive result and I thought there were spells today which were really encouraging.

"It's given me some massive headaches which is exactly what I want. Some of the lads have come off the bench today. The strength and depth of what we wanted to have in the squad is not far off."

There were two trialists on the pitch this afternoon, one a striker and the another a left winger believed to be Raheem Hanley. Any possible deals?

"We might be there with one, potentially they will be in Tuesday and Thursday training, then we'll see."

Positive signs from pre-season?

"I just think it's how well the boys have got on and also how well they are taking on the information, I think that really encouraging to see. I feel we've got quite a few natural leaders.

"The competition for places, I look at it and in nearly every position there's a couple of players who can play in that position and do a really good job."

Interviewee Keith Hall felt both free kick and corner routines are 'much enhanced' from last season.

"We've done some work on it, I don't want to give too much away, it's a massive part at any level."

Hall also noted that a quarter of the season is done by September 7th.

"It's crazy, it's such a crazy start. And I don't think too many games will get called off. I think it's why they front-load it especially with the FA Cup and FA Trophy.

"Eight games in August, it's important to hit the ground running and hopefully if we take today's form into that first few weeks of the season we'll be alright."

Richards was asked about latest confirmed signing Jared Hodgkiss.

"You've seen in a few of the games he's played what he brings.

"He's a leader, I made him captain today.

"He's got experience of getting promoted out of the National League, he's got experience of playing in the League.

"And he's just got an unbelievable desire to want to win and the whole group to do well. And he's been really refreshing to have in and around here.

"To have his experience that he's had during a very successful career, I'm just pleased we've got him on board."

It was noticable he was barking orders from the far side of the pitch.

"You want people even if they haven't got the armband on to be doing that. Jordan Cullinane-Liburd (captain after Hodgkiss was subbed) today as well barking orders. Gowling can well and Cane who was captain at Weston.

"It's really important we've got those leaders"

Have you made up your mind who will be captain?

"No, it's good to have all these headaches!"

Thomas looks ahead to the new season

Keiron Thomas spoke to the press following this afternoon's win over Aston Villa Under-23s. The combative player talks about the forthcoming season, which gets underway next week.

REACTION: Richards pleased with win

Hereford Head Coach Marc Richards was very pleased with this afternoon's 1-0 win over Aston Villa Under-23s, stating that the players were taking on board what the management team are trying to utilise.

He also talks about new signing Jared Hodgkiss and how the team are shaping up ahead of the start of the new season, which gets underway next week.

REPORT: Own goal sees Bulls beat Aston Villa U23

Hereford beat Aston Villa Under-23s 1-0 this afternoon thanks to an own goal.

Isaiah Bazeley Graham could only divert the ball into his own net four minutes after the break after Keiron Thomas had fizzed in a cross.

Mike Symons should have made it 2-0 in the 68th minute but headed straight at the goalkeeper, while at the other end, Brandon Hall made a number of decent saves.

Hereford named two trialists in the starting line-up, with a sub keeper also on trial.

It is understood that the trialist who played number 11 was former Chorley player Raheem Hanley.

Jared Hodgkiss, whose signing was confirmed yesterday, was given the captain's armband.

And head coach Marc Richards named so many players as subs they could all sit on the bench. Tommy O'Sullivan sat by the corner flag.

The away side had the first chance of the game on the quarter-hour mark, but Callum Rowe's effort flashed wide.

The trialist striker then had a low shot saved at the second attempt by the Villa keeper, while Brandon Hall did well to deny  Indiana Vassilev after he was set up by Jack Clarke.

Hereford would have been pleased with how they matched their opponents in the first half and it didn't take long for them to open the scoring in the second half, albeit in fortunate circumstances.

The visitors went close when Colin Odutayo saw his attempt tipped over by Hall, while Vassilev saw an effort saved.
With 15 minutes to go, both Jordan Nicholson and Tom Owen-Evans saw efforts blocked, while Rhys Davies was also denied.

Then late in the game, a low ball from Davies just evaded Symons.
Hereford: Hall, Hodgkiss (O’Sullivan 46), Riley (Davies-Austin 73), Thomas (Bray 60), Cullinane-Liburd, Pope, Owen-Evans (Bishop 83), Jagger Cane (Finn 60), A. Trialist (Nicholson 60), Styche (Symons 60), B. Trialist (Davies 73). Subs not used: C. Trialist, Maye.
Attendance: 625 (50 away fans)

Ex-Chorley player believed to be on trial

The trialist who is wearing the number 11 shirt today and who impressed on Wednesday night is believed to be Raheem Hanley.

The 25-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract expired at Chorley at the end of last season. He has previously been at Northampton Town and Halifax, while also having a short stint with Welsh side, Connah's Quay Nomads.

Three trialists in Bulls squad today - including a striker

Hereford have named three trialists in their squad for today's friendly against Aston Villa Under-23s. The number 11 is the same trialist who impressed on Wednesday night, rumoured to be Raheem Hanley who was released by Chorley at the end of last season. The other trialist starting is a striker, while today's substitute goalkeeper is also on trial. There is no Rowan Liburd in the match-day squad, but Tom Owen-Evans does start. Jared Hodgkiss - who has now signed for Hereford after being named as a trialist during pre-season - captains the side.

1) Brandon Hall
2) Jared Hodgkiss
3) Martin Riley
4) Keiron Thomas
5) Jordan Cullinane-Liburd
6) Jason Pope
7) Tom Owen-Evans
8) Jacob Jagger Cane

Last Pre-Season Friendly This Afternoon

Hereford FC play their last friendly of the current pre-season this afternoon at Edgar Street. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Aston Villa Under 23's are the opponents.

It's thought head coach Marc Richards will be back in the dug-out. Assistant coach Will Morford has been in charge for the last two games.

As regards Villa, Morford thought it would be another tough game.

"It will be good preparation for the start of the season," he said after last Wednesday's friendly against Wolves.

"It will get some more minutes into the boys so they will hopefully be fit and ready to go come the start of the season next Saturday."

It is expected that the left-wing trialist (Number 11) who played on Wednesday will get some minutes this afternoon.

"He's got good pedigree, he quick, he defended well, he's good in one v one situations and is exciting.

"He had a good game so one to watch."

An Apology For Earlier Inaccurate Post

Earlier today BN posted an article about new advertising outside the club.

We suggested that Andrew Graham, the chairman of Hereford FC, had become a sponsor of the club.

This was incorrect.

The business that has purchased the advertising space is owned by 20 year old Jimmy Graham, a self-made business owner.

BN would like to apologise to both Andrew Graham and Jimmy Graham for our mistake.

Hodgkiss Signing Confirmed

Hereford FC have confirmed that right back Jared Hodgkiss has signed for the club until the end of the season.

Officially he had been a trialist for the past few weeks.

32 year old Hodgkiss, who was born in Stafford, started his career at West Brom.

In 2009 he joined Forest Green where he stayed for five seasons before moving to Kidderminster.

He left in the summer of 2017 and joined Macclesfield.

"We’ve been very encouraged by his experience, leadership and what we’ve seen during the games he has played in," said head of football Tim Harris.

Hereford United manager Graham Turner tried to sign Hodgkiss in 2008 but the right back decided to move to Aberdeen.

"Jared wanted to join us," said Jimmy Caldwerwood, the Aberdeen manager at the time.

"He turned down a few clubs to come here and had to phone Hereford to say he wouldn't be joining them because he had the chance to play for Aberdeen."

Bulls Keep Wolves In Check

Hereford FC and a Wolves under 23's side played at Edgar Street last night in Ryan Green's Testimonial.

Although the result was a goal-less draw, the Hereford management would probably have been the happier of the two given that keeper Brandon Hall hardly had a save to make all evening.

Ryan Green captained the Bulls for the first half and the side included one new trialist, a left winger.

Playing towards the Meadow End on a very warm summers evening, striker Reece Styche had a chance of opening the scoring from just outside the area.

A minute later he appeared to have been brought down just inside the area but the referee wasn't interested.

The new trialist cut in from the left but lost his footing before he could shoot.

Martin Riley was off target with a header

As the half went on Hereford were having the better of the play and won several corners but couldn't take advantage even with Green in the box.

Add caption
Another good ball from the trialist but no-one could get on the end of it.

Just before half-time an emotional Green came off to a standing ovation. The last appearance in a Hereford shirt for the Welshman who first played for the club sixteen years ago in August 2003.

The second half started with Hereford creating several chances. Jordan Liburd collected the ball with his back to goal, turned and shot.

The trialist continued to impress on the left with some nifty footwork.

With sixty minutes gone, Styche had a chance to put Hereford ahead but his shot hit the cross-bar.

Assistant head coach Will Morford brought on several players including Mike Symons and Tom Owen-Evans to try and break the stalemate. Symo did get past the keeper and tried to turn the ball into the net but it was cleared off the line.

Wolves had the better of the possession during last ten minutes but couldn't find the back of the net despite creating several chances.

A useful workout for Hereford but the lack of goals is a concern.

Hereford: Hall, Hodgkiss, Gowling, Cane, Green (c), Riley, Nicholson, Thomas, Liburd, Styche, Trialist.

Subs: Davies, Symons, Cullianane-Liburd, Owen-Evans, Finn, 0'Sullivan, Bray, Powell

Attendance: 701 with 39 in the away stand.

Aston Villa Under 23's are next at Edgar Street on Saturday kick-off 3pm.
