Chester's crisis has taken another steep downward turn after the players refused to board the team bus for tonight's match at Forest Green.
Former Managing Director Bob Gray, still an employee of the club, told the BBC: "Negotiations had been going on all day but, in the end, we'd no option but to say we could not fulfil the fixture."
Gray then blamed Chester's supporters, who called for a boycott of the club: "The fans' boycott has finally taken its toll. I'm not sure it's the right way to go about things. But the players have obviously been unhappy about not being paid."
Message board claims say that the coach company wouldn't let the bus depart without being paid for the trip, and that only six players were prepared to play without the wages they were promised last week. It had earlier been reported that the Police were demanding payment to cover Sunday's derby with Wrexham up front, but the club had sold only a handful of tickets.
The BBC say that the game was called off at 5.11pm, with Forest Green likely to seek compensation for the late cancellation.
