Mike Roberts |
Jon Hale has written this appreciation of Mike Roberts.
'It is indeed very sad news to learn of Mike’s passing. He has been a passionate supporter of both Hereford United and Hereford FC stretching back decades, and his knowledge and experience will be sorely missed by everyone in and out of football.
Mike lived and breathed Hereford United, and I remember as a youngster attending games with my father, Mike always being at the centre of the club. It seemed he just wanted to immerse himself to ensure the club and match days ran smoothly, and although I didn’t know him personally back then, you sensed he was someone you could completely trust and rely upon.
Naturally I got to know Mike better as we put together the plans for the re-birth of the club as Hereford FC. Mike was eager to step forward as an initial shareholder; together with the other initial shareholders, he just wanted to see us have the platform to launch the club and have the best possible starting point.
Mike was always prepared to give advice, provide encouragement or simply just to chat about times past. He reminded us often about what a football club really meant to people, and gave us focus as to what Hereford FC should mean to everyone.
He was never over-bearing; if you wanted some advice he would give it. If you wanted the benefit of his experience he would offer it. He trusted us, he respected us – and the feeling was mutual.
Mike was an exceptional knowledge in the running of a football club, someone you would listen to, respect and enjoy the company of.
Thank you Mike, for everything you did for Hereford United and Hereford FC, you will be fondly remembered always at Edgar Street. May you rest in peace.'
