Former Hereford Striker Ron Fogg Has Died

“Club historian Ron Parrott has just received the very sad news that United’s former goalscoring hero Ron Fogg, passed away this Tuesday at the age of 82. Ron only spent one season with us, back in 1965/66, so he couldn’t really be described as a legend but his most famous goal for United, the one that knocked Millwall out of the FA Cup at the second round stage that season, was indeed legendary. United of course, were still a Southern League side at that time, whilst Millwall were carrying all before them at the top of the old Third Division (today’s First Division) and in goal they boasted Alex Stepney who went on to play for Manchester United. As a youngster, I loved Ron Fogg, he was my sort of centre-forward! He was big and bustling, in the style of Eric Redrobe and he was a hard man but fair, who could give as good as he got – and often did! He was also not lacking in skill and had some nifty footwork for an old-fashioned centre-forward and his tally of 32 goals in his 52 games that season was magnificent. Speaking to family members this week, it seems that Ron hadn’t enjoyed the best of health for the last three or four years but his passing was peaceful and his family were in attendance."

Ron Parrott has also compiled the following pen-pic of Ron Fogg:-

Born Tilbury 3rd June 1938, died Tilbury 3rd November 2020

Ron started his career with his home-town club Tilbury FC and soon attracted the attention of Southend United, who signed him on as an amateur in August 1959. During his single season at Roots Hall, Ron made just two first-team appearances before dropping down into non-league again and signing for Southern League Premier Weymouth in the summer of 1960. Ron spent three happy seasons at the Recreation Ground before his goalscoring exploits persuaded Aldershot to give him a second chance in the Football League and he signed for them in August 1963. In two seasons with the Hampshire club, Ron scored 28 goals in 64 games and was at centre-forward when the Shots famously knocked Aston Villa out of the FA Cup in 1964/65. Hereford United's manager Bob Dennison then brought Ron to Edgar Street in the summer of 1965 and he quickly became a crowd favourite as he was top scorer, going on to score a magnificent 32 goals in just 52 appearances. His most memorable strike was the goal that gave United a 1-0 FA Cup win over third division leaders Millwall. Ironically he was employed as a docker – at Millwall docks Ron was an old-fashion, bustling type of centre-forward and although he missed quite a few, he also scored loads but most importantly, he was always in the right place to have a crack - a perfect attribute for a centre-forward!.Ron left Edgar Street at the end of his only season with the club and signed for Southern League rivals, Bedford Town in order to cut down on his travelling Ron spent three seasons at the Eyrie and although he started off well enough, they were relegated at the end of his third season, during which he was dropped for a "lack of effort" and he promptly put in a transfer request. Despite the arrival of a new manager before the end of the season and the offer of a new contract, Ron decided to call it a day and moved on to Chelmsford City. Having lost a bit of pace, Ron decided to have a go at centre-half and it turned out to be a position in which he excelled. Ron scored once in 42 appearances for Chelmsford, spread over three seasons. His final move was again a bit closer to home and he signed for Dartford in the summer of 1972, where he spent his last season, again in the centre of defence, before retiring from the game.
