Quorn Ground Guide

Simon Wright takes a look at Quorn where Hereford play on Saturday. Please note the post code LE12 8RB

You’ll like this place, even if we are rather overdosing on Leicestershire trips during the business end of the season. The Stadium is modern, clean and geared up for a higher level. The villagers spent several years in Step 4 recently and it shows although the finance really stemmed from an activated sell on clause for Luke Varney, who Quorn sold to Crewe. The “hmmm, this ain’t bad” impression starts with the ample car park with room for 150-200 vehicles.

For the benefit of Disabulls, there’s a ramp to enter the ground from the car park. Level access everywhere bar wheeling round to the seats. There are steps en route so ask the stewards to escort you out of one exit gate and in the other. Or just stay on the flat area in front of the bar.

The Clubhouse is clean and modern albeit the bar selection is the familiar Guinness, Carlsberg and Smooth Pour. During my visit, some regulars watched the game through the windows. Catering is normally provided by two serving hatches. Although not indicated, its food on the left and drinks on the right. The food range is not large however I was assured there is real meat in the pies.

The village side have a gleaming 400 seater stand along the touchline and – joy – a covered terrace behind one goal with four steps running the full width of the pitch.

I imagined Quorn to be a charming village. That may be so but it’s certainly not too close to the ground. Farley Way Stadium sits on the edge of a new housing estate, next to a business park and overlooks the main road. According to one grizzled Quorn FC veteran “the whole place is now full of yuppies..” The Quarndon Fox (LE12 8DX) is the nearest pub and within walking distance. (High Street towards the village). It’s a Vintage Inn so food-led but cask ale and 4 ciders are available.

Despite struggling to stay in the Midland Premier League, Quorn are ambitious. Rather than replace their worn out astroturf training area, they intend to convert the land to a care home and use the proceeds to fund a 3G main pitch. Don’t be fooled by their lowly League position. I’ve seen them three times and Quorn can play. They are a counter attacking side, based around young Courtney Meade. You’ll soon spot his distinctive hair.

By Road 104 miles (LE12 8RB) M5/ M42 then A42. From J13, take the A512 to Loughborough and then the A6 (sp Quorn). Take exit towards Quorn. At roundabout take third exit onto Farley Way. Ground on right half a mile along.

By Rail: Three hours by train to Loughborough with two changes. Then
Arriva Midlands buses 126/127 / Winson Coaches bus X27 from Loughborough (Lemyngton Street, 13 mins walk from station) to Quorn (Loughborough Road at Farley Way); seven times per hour, takes 8 mins. Then up Farley Way and ground is on left (5 mins).
