Council Bond Article From HT

Mike Cartright has pointed us in the direction of this article in the Hereford Times from September 2001:

BOND money could soon be released for the refurbishment of Hereford United Football Club's burnt-out Sportsmans Club.

Council Leader Terry James this week denied Herefordshire Council was responsible for delay and said the solicitors of Formsole Ltd, which is owned by Chelverton and the BS Group, were now prepared to release the deposit.

Chelverton spokesman Simon Morgan has issued a letter of apology to Cllr James.

Mr James said: "It is a complicated situation but it was not the council who should have been blamed for the delay. A letter of apology from Chelverton says Formsole's solicitors were responsible."

Mr James hit back at suggestions from Hereford United Football Club supremo Graham Turner, who accused the council of not giving the club overall approval to use £20,000 of a £100,000 investment to refurbish the social club.

A letter from Mr Morgan said: "I can reassure you (Mr James) that Chelverton fully support the release of the bond and remain committed to having the balance of £87,000 retained as a continued bond.

"It does appear, however, that Stuart Gent (Herefordshire Council) has been waiting for a formal response from Formsole's solicitors. I apologise for this and the possible criticism that may be levelled at the council as a result of this delay."

Mr James said the council had outlined the situation to Hereford United Independent Supporters' Association and written to Hereford United.
Mr Turner said: "I think it would be inappropriate for me to comment at this stage."

Chelverton spokesman Simon Morgan was not available for comment.
