Hereford v Bedford - We've Met Before

Hereford play Bedford Town tomorrow evening at Edgar Street.

The two clubs have met before. At least once was in the FA Cup.

It was a third round tie in the 1965/66 season played at Bedford on Saturday January 22nd 1966.

Bedford won the tie 2-1.

Much of the following comes from The Hereford United Story written by John Williamson.

'Only five clubs from outside the Football League had fought their way through to the Third Round and Hereford had the misfortune to be drawn against fellow Southern Leagures Bedford Town.

The match was played on a snow covered surface and although Ron Fogg scored a late goal Bedford were already two up and it was the Eagles who went through to the next round.'

In the Southern League the two teams met at Edgar Street on the opening day of the 1966/67 season.

Ron Fogg had moved to Bedford but Hereford had brought in John Charles and Eddie Holliday.

'Charles and Holliday both got their names on the scoresheet and Albert Derrick scored a hat-trick in an encouraging 5-1 win.

The crowd was 4869, the highest for the opening of a season for some years.

Roger Griffiths made club history when he replaced Peter McCall for the second half and became Hereford's first substitute.'
