Match preview - Darlington FC vs Hereford FC

Hereford FC make the long trip to Blackwell Meadows, Darlington, on Saturday, aiming to concede fewer than three goals first and foremost, second and secondmost to maybe come away with a draw, and third and thirdmost to somehow actually win an away match in this battle of the spent-ages-being-perennially-rubbish-in-Division 4-then-went-bust veterans.

Russell Slade is, if his pronouncements to the media are any yardstick, as fed up as the rest of us about the ease with which a relatively expensively assembled squad can capitulate quite so easily, comprehensively and repeatedly to more parochially and cost-effectively assembled opposition. So, with the Alfreton home game predictably called off after the county was hit by a century’s worth of rain in a few hours, Slade has used the enforced break to bring some new players in. With two being strikers, he seems to be adopting that old and possibly apocryphal West Ham approach in addressing the leakiness at the back, namely “If they score four, we score five”. Personally I’m all for this, home and away, although the likelihood currently is that the opposition will meet their side of the bargain but the Bulls will come about five goals short of theirs.

The recent glut of signings bloats the squad to Premier League levels - it’s unknown whether the club has recently found favour with a sugar daddy from the Gulf since the Eliot Richards budgetary situation or whether its accountant is spinning in his abacus, but whatever the explanation there will presumably be a cull of some sort soon. This division is a graveyard for clubs who consider themselves bigger than it, clubs who chuck a load of money at players, and then add more players when the first lot of players weren’t robust enough. Stockport were Stuckport for ages doing that until they realised that they simply needed to replicate the togetherness, the teamwork, of the smaller clubs beating them, and OK adding a bit of quality to that using their deeper pockets. It’s alchemy getting it right though, of course. Hopefully Slade is a card-carrying alchemist. He’s certainly shown himself to be a card-carrying mentalist in celebrating that lucky win against Gateshead in front of the Meadow End a while ago, and I’m all for that.

Any road up, as they might say in Darlington, unless that’s just Yorkshire or somewhere else in the north, the Quakers are, irritatingly, on a good run. They’ve won their last three league matches and sit just a point below Hereford, in a middle-of-the-table scrum which sees sixth to sixteenth separated by just five points. I’ve said it before, but this is a division almost entirely made up of also-rans with little quality, and if Slade can somehow find an eleven from that bloated squad that can gel it’s the perfect time to slam that business model, or whatever other corporate hideousness the board refers to it as, into overdrive and to get promoted.

Darlo beat Kidderminster in the week, but as Bulls News has reported it sounded like a mugging. Previously they took maximum points from their matches against Alfreton and Leamington away and Boston at home. They also found time during that run to make short work of dumping Tamworth out of the Cup, that self-same Tamworth who Hereford made very laborious work of losing to.

For the Bulls, a fully rested Jordan Nicholson will presumably be salivating at the prospect of putting in a performance against his former employers, and debuts could be given all over the place given the flurry of new signings. A formation disregarding defenders entirely can’t be dismissed, and on recent performances, Kieran Thomas excepted, neither should it be.

Put your money on 3-0, your soul on 0-3, your brain on hold and your heart in your mouth, as the HFC-away emotional rollercoaster creaks once more into motion (rollercoaster suggesting of course that there are ups and downs – this one generally just does the downs).

However, it can’t last for ever…

Kiddy Deserved A Point From Darlington

Kidderminster deserved a point out of last night's game at Darlington according to their manager John Pemberton.

Just before Darlington scored an incident left Kiddy's Rhys Williams with a suspected broken nose after a high challenge.

"You do play to the whistle but it’s a foul, it’s a blatant foul," said Pemberton as reported by the Kidderminster OS.

"I just don’t understand how you don’t give that, and I don’t want to start making excuses but it’s just facts.

"We showed a lot of effort tonight, certainly the second half, I don’t think they had a shot on goal.

"We were more than comfortable… we pinned them back and pinned them back, but we couldn’t quite get that breakthrough that we needed.

"We certainly deserved at least a point from it, if not more."

Last Tuesday Hereford had a goal disallowed at Southport after the referee deemed that a foul had taken place twenty or so seconds previously. Somewhat similar circumstances but a different ruling.

Darlington Manager Hopes To Keep Winning Run Going

Another win for Darlington last night, they defeated Kidderminster 1-0, means that they have now won six games in a row and manager Alun Armstrong hopes they can make it seven on Saturday with a win over Hereford.

"We've got a little target to try and keep this going," said Armstrong as reported on the Darlington OS.

"But it's going to be a difficult game on Saturday against Hereford.

"Our fans could be the twelve man. We've given them something to shout about at the minute.

"These games just get tougher and tougher.

"What starts happening when you are on one of these runs is that one of these teams wants to be the one that beats you.

"So we've got to expect a real tough game.

"Obviously you've got ex-Darlington players coming back and that will add a little bit of spice to it.

"But what they will see is a totally different Darlington team to what they were playing in last season.

"There's no way our lads will be pushed over."

Darlington Defeat Kidderminster

In tonight's only National North League fixture Darlington defeated Kidderminster 1-0.

Darlington move up to 11th position in the table

On Saturday Darlington are at home to Hereford.

Large squad at Hereford

With news that Hereford have brought in striker Victor Sodeinde on a one-month loan from Nottingham Forest, some supporters have asked how many players are currently on the books at Edgar Street.

Including youngsters signed on, players out on loan, on dual registration deals or currently injured, it appears that there are 34, while goalkeeper Brandon Powell also trains with the first team.

The full list, which can be found here, includes a number of attacking players who can play in midfield or upfront.

At a Q&A with chairman Andrew Graham in June, Head of Football Tim Harris said that the ideal squad size for this season would be 20.

Sodeinde Needs Work Said Former Manager

Pic copyright Nottingham Forest
Victor Sodeinde who has come to Hereford on loan joined parent club Nottingham Forest in January 2018.

Forest signed the teenage forward from Maidstone United.

Sodeinde did not make a senior appearance for Maidstone but he did go out on trial with West Brom and later with Charlton.

Just before he went to West Brom, Maidstone manager Jay Saunders spoke about Sodeinde.
“He’s someone that’s scored a lot of goals in the academy.
“He did well in the FA Youth Cup and after we played Bromley I had Charlton and a few other clubs who wanted to take him in.

“I believe he’s doing a week with West Brom, he’s then going to come back and do a week with Charlton and I think there’s one or two other clubs as well.

"He needs a lot of work but he’s someone that’s got the rawness, he’s got pace, he seems to be in the right place at the right time."

Dual Registration for Alessi

Daniel Alessi, who featured for Hereford in their HFA Cup game at Hinton, has signed dual registration forms according to the club.

He can now play for both Bromsgrove and Hereford.

New date for Alfreton game

Hereford's postponed game against Alfreton will now take place on November 12.

The original fixture was called off last Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Bulls were also due to face National North League leaders York at Edgar Street on November 9, but that match has been postponed due to York's involvement in the FA Cup. No new date has been confirmed, but Hereford have said it won't be in November due to both clubs' commitments.

Nottingham Forest striker comes on board on loan

Hereford have added to their squad by signing Victor Sodeinde on a month-long loan deal from Nottingham Forest.
The 19-year-old has experience of playing in the National League with Maidstone United and has be part of a Forest side who are top of their Under-23 League.
“Victor is a strong player” said Hereford manager Russell Slade, as reported on the club's official website.
"He can play in any of the three positions up top, he’s powerful, quick, effective and has a good physical presence.
“He’s another player who is a bit different to what we’ve got here at the moment and I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do for us.”
Sodeinde added: “I’ve had a good start to the season at Nottingham Forest, we’re top of the U23 league, I scored recently so I’m in good form.
“I’m looking forward to getting going and seeing what I can achieve.
"I’ve played in the National League, so I know this sort of level. I adapted quickly whilst I was at Maidstone and I’m looking to adapt just as quickly here as well.
“I’m really looking forward to playing here, I trained with the lads last night, it was freezing cold, but it was a good session! I think I fitted in well, it’s a great group of lads.
“I like playing off the defender’s shoulder, getting in behind the back four and I like to think I’ve got a knack of scoring goals.”

Men, Are You Having Miserable Mondays, SAD Or Just Struggling?

Two likeminded individuals with lived experience of mental ill health have come together to launch a monthly social group for men in Herefordshire who suffer with mental ill health, or at risk of becoming ill.

Councillor Paul Stevens, Deputy Mayor of Hereford and Euan McPherson, Chief Executive of Services for Independent Living, have joined forces to set up a group where men of all ages can come together over a cuppa, a game of pool, maybe a kick about or perhaps a community project.

The Hereford Men’s Mental Health (HMMH) group will be an opportunity for men to be able to socialise with other people, in a safe environment where they know they are amongst people with similar issues.

Councillor Stevens said ‘Men’s groups have been shown to be very effective at creating a space for men to feel safe when they have mental health issues. Hereford men deserve this opportunity and I hope people will come along and join Euan and me on a Monday evening.’

Euan commented that ‘This will not be a group where you sit in a circle and talk about your problems. This is a group where we will have a bit of banter, play a bit of pool, maybe kick a ball about and when or if people want to talk about any issues they are experiencing they can. There will be no pressure to talk about anything though.’

The two have some ideas about general activities that people may enjoy but are interested to speak to people who attend the group to develop ideas for the future.

The first meeting will be on Monday 11th November from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the United In The Community (UITC) building Victoria Park, Hereford HR1 1AW. Pop along for a cuppa and say hello, no booking necessary and refreshments will be provided.

Please call Euan on 01568 616653 for more information.

Bentley Leaves Morecambe

Jim Bentley has quit Morecambe after 17 years with the club. He says he wants a new challenge and is reportedly set to join AFC Fylde. Update: Now Confirmed.

Bentley is well known to Hereford United supporters as the big central defender who could score as well as defend when the two teams met particularily in the years proceeding Hereford's promotion to League Two.

He scored for Morecambe in the conference playoff semi-final in 2006.

'Twiss delivered to the far post, out of the reach of Brown, and onto the head of the flying Jim Bentley.'

This from Morecambe FC:

THE board of directors of Morecambe FC has with great sadness today accepted Jim Bentley’s resignation from the club after more than 17 years with us.

Bentley, who joined the club as a player in 2002 and skippered the Shrimps into the Football League, took over as manager from Sammy Mcilroy in May 2011 and in that time became the Football League’s longest serving manager.

A board statement said: “It is with great reluctance that we have accepted the resignation of Jim Bentley today.

"Jim has stated his desire to take on a new challenge and it is only right that we honour his wish after the service he has given this club.

“He has been an amazing servant for us as player, captain and manager and has deservedly gained a fantastic reputation throughout the game for what he has achieved with the club."

Back in 2002 Bentley was linked with a move to Hereford United after he had decided to leave Telford but he choose Morecambe.

Clyro Fireworks Back With a Bang

ImageThe annual bonfire and fireworks display at Clyro Court, is returning this year with new organisers, following the announcement from Black Mountain Lions that the 2018 event would be the last.

Slade Was Expected To Give Dawson Home Debut This Afternoon

Hereford FC manager Russell Slade was expected to give Stephen Dawson his home debut this afternoon, but weather has put paid to that.

Dawson played the whole 90 minutes at Southport last Tuesday evening and looked quite fit considering he hadn't played for months.

"I think he's had about 70 minutes with Rochdale under 23's," Slade told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"He has been training there quite regularily over the last three weeks so I knew he was reasonable condition.

"He'll get stronger and fitter, there's no doubt about that because he hasn't played a lot of football.

"His influence, his knowledge, he's going to be a key figure for us going forward, no doubt about it."

My Loan At Hereford Helped Me Said Barkhuizen

Tom Barkhuizen Celebrates His Goal Against Plymouth In April 2012 - Andy Compton Pictures
Tom Barkhuizen is plying his trade at Preston these days but eight seasons ago he was on loan at Hereford United.

Last Tuesday he scored in Preston's 1-1 draw with visiting Leeds.

Today he is featured in Preston's match day programme.

Now 26, Barkhuizen started his career at Blackpool, then spent time on loan at Hereford United in the 2011/12 season, then at Fleetwood in 2012/13 before establishing himself at Morecambe and catching the eye of then PNE boss Simon Grayson and signing at Deepdale in January 2017.

“I think you learn the game by playing in the lower leagues,” said Barkhuizen who signed a new three-year-deal in the summer.
Another Goal For Barkhuizen - This One Against Burton In November 2011
“I went out on loan at 18 to Hereford which helped me develop a lot. You see so many players stay in U23 teams and then they become 23 and they don’t really know the game.
"If you go out on loan and are playing games at an early age, it benefits you in the long run, you learn about the game and what it means and I think it's done that for me."
Barkhuizen made 39 appearances for the Bulls.

Youth Cup Game At Portsmouth Goes Ahead

Hereford FC under 18's are travelling to Portsmouth this morning for a First Round FA Youth Cup tie.

There are no problems with the pitch so the game goes ahead.

Kick-off is at 1pm and RadioHerefordFC are set to broadcast the game.

Update 11.45am: The team has arrived at the stadium.
