The last time The Bulls played ‘alifax it was at The Walkers
in the Conference play-off Final. Since
then The Shaymen have gone through the mill both financially and on the
field. In 2007/08, they went into
administration and with debts in excess of £2m were forced into liquidation. Halifax Town AFC ceased to exist and a new
club FC Halifax Town started life in the Northern Premier Division 1 North.
Season 2009/10 saw the new club seal their first promotion
with an end of season victory at Ossett Albion in front of over 1000 travelling
fans. 2010/11 brought more success
largely through the goals of new signing Jamie Vardy. Vardy struck 29 times in his 41 appearances as Halifax romped to
their second promotion in as many season.
In the Conference North for 2011/12, Vardy was sold to
£leetwood after four games and three goals.
The Shaymen went on to compete in the play-offs but finished facing a
second season with the northers. They
went one better in 2012/13 defeating Jon Brady’s Brackley Town in the play-off
final. Halifax were back in The
Conference for 2013/14.
Records show 48 meetings between the clubs with The Bulls
winning 21 to Halifax’ 15 with 12 draws.
The Shay Stadium has seen a few changes since our last visit
(also involving Jon Brady). Fans will
recall the part-built stand to the left of the north bank terrace. This is now completed and, unless we number
over 250, is likely to provide our accommodation on Saturday. Otherwise, we’ll be opposite in the old
Skircoat Stand. Admission is believed
to be £13 for adults, £10 for concessions and £7.50 for U16’s.
HUISA – Departs from Radford’s at 8.30am with a fare of £22
(non-members £24). Seats can be booked
through The Club office (08442 761939).
TRAIN – Out of Hereford at 07.53, 08.53 or 09.53 arriving at
11.43, 12.43 or 13.45 with changes at Manchester and Huddersfield. The return journey means a departure at
18.18 to arrive in The Shire at 22.51 (change at Leeds and Manchester). Best fare appears to be £32.60, which ain’t
bad. Halifax station is a ten-minute
walk from the ground conveniently passing both The Pump Rooms and The Three
Pigeons!
BY CAR – To Worcester then M5 (north) to join the M6. Leave the M6 at J21A (second exit) to join
the M62 (sign Leeds, Bolton, Manchester). Continue following signs for Leeds
while the road becomes the M60 and back to the M62. Leave the M62 at J24 and at the roundabout take the third exit
onto the A629 (sign Huddersfield, Halifax).
At Ainley Top roundabout take the second exit onto the A629 (sign
Halifax). BEWARE of speed cameras on
the A629. After a little less than
three miles, split right onto Shaw Hill for The Shay. Distance is about 173 miles and you should allow just over three
hours. Postcode is HX! 2YS.
PARKING – At the ground is limited at £3 but street parking
is reasonably easily found.
ALEHOUSES – The Three Pigeons and The Pump Rooms have always
been well used by Bulls’ fans on previous visits and with the ground being
close to the town centre there is plenty of choice. The Club bar does accept visitors but fills up well before the
game.
