Gills Boss Feeling The Pressure

It might be tense at Edgar Street on Saturday with both sides itching for three points to ease their individual crises.

While the Bulls need three points to hope to pull away from the drop zone, visitors Gillingham travel west with boss Andy Hessenthaler knowing that he is well short of his points target for the season so far.

With chairman Paul Scally telling him, and the press, that anything other than promotion will be deemed a failure, the Gills sit six point adrift of the leaders and without a goal from open play in their last four matches. Since a 3-0 win over Plymouth, the Gills have lost three and claimed a home draw against Accrington only thanks to a late penalty.

While Hessenthaler says he is not yet under pressure, he told the BBC that even if they won their next two games they'd still be short of their points target for the opening ten matches:

"We've got to win our next two games - it's as simple as that, because we're not winning games. We've got to go and win at Hereford and we've got to at home to Burton. If we do that we'll be three points off our target - which won't be the end of the world."

The Gills' attacking options have been limited after summer signing Adam Birchall was ruled out until the New Year before the season started. With Dennis Oli still struggling for fitness, Danny Kedwell has been saddled with the weight of expectation to hit the ground running in his first League season.

The former Wimbledon man's two goals so far both came from the penalty spot thanks to the hapless Plymouth defence, and Hessenthaler has been trialling and chasing a string of players in a bid to sign a new frontman. His latest attempt was to lure Oxford striker Jon-Paul Pittman to Priestfield, but the player opted for a return to Crawley instead.
