Chairman Gives Insight Into Football Budget

Hereford FC chairman Chris Ammonds has given supporters an insight into the club's football budget.

It comes after manager Paul Caddis released two players and brought two into the club.

Ammonds also noted the generousity of the benefactors who have put £50K into the squad builder.

"The way it works is as a board during the closed season we do a load of work to try and work out what we can do for the football budget.

"We try and make as much available as we feel we possibly can without taking any risks with the future of the club and also taking into account that we always know that we will have other work to do around the club so we need to leave a contingency in place for that.

"Then once we have worked out what we think is the right figure essentially we tell Paul what that figure is and then it's completely up to him how he goes about spending that in terms of both his playing squad and his staff.

"People will be pleased to know that we don't as a board start dictating to him, who he can and can't buy, clearly we have to sign off signings when they are put to us. But it would be very rare we would start to exert an influence on a signing.

"One of Paul's biggest qualities over the years he has been at the club so far has been the way he has spent the money in the budget like it's his own.

"He's really careful with the money, he always wants to seek value, he has his own value on players and I think he finds it very hard to go beyond it in his own mind which I think is a real positive and a real strength, so he spends our money really carefully.

"We've gone on record that the budget this year was increased from previous seasons.

"When you consider what we were able to offer Paul in his first season at the club, it's very different to what it was then because we were in a really grave financial position, so it is much better.

"Paul has managed to get competitive teams on the field with his previous budgets and I've no doubt he is getting a competitive team on the field this year.

"We won't be one of the biggest, we won't have the biggest budget in the league by any means because we are only spending money that we earn. What we can do is give Paul is as much as we possibly can and that's what we endeavour to do.

"He's obviously mixed things up a little bit, made some changes, freeing up some money to bring in Montel (Gibson) has made a difference, Michael Parker.

"We've been very fortunate in terms of the founding shareholders who made their offer to do match funding at the start of the season, they've gone ahead and increased the money they put in.

"They've put in the same as they did last year, so they've put in £50,000 last year because the fans raised £50,000.

"They've gone ahead and put in that figure again this year, fans have raised about £33,000 if you include the profit that we made from the golf day at Burghill.

"I'm really grateful to the founding shareholders for once again committing to that figure even though supporters didn't reach it in terms of match funding.

"I think it's important we come out and actually say that because it is incredible generousity, they are not duty bound to do that but they've done it and clearly that's been helping Paul with his squad changes as well which is great."
