Chester's Derby Called Off

Chester's derby match with Wrexham has been cancelled after their local council refused to allow fans into the game, according to the local press.

The Council, who also own the stadium, acted after the Police refused to cover the game with Chester unable to cover the bill. A prohibition notice was placed on the Deva Stadium banning spectators from the area on safety grounds until further notice.

The game could go ahead behind closed doors, but there would be little point in the cash strapped club staging the match with no prospect of earning any money. Wrexham's official site carries a statement that suggests that talks are ongoing and that the game may yet go ahead, although it is unclear quite what team Chester could field after they mustered just six players for last night's game at Forest Green.

Meanwhile Welsh League heavyweights TNS have applied to the Welsh FA to use the Deva Stadium as their base next season after they were refused funding to bring their own ground up to scratch for the new Welsh Premier League. TNS currently play in Oswestry, 27 miles away from Chester.
