O'Kelly could return to Walsall

Former Hereford United coach, Richard O'Kelly, has spoken of rumours lnking him with a return to Walsall, where the manager's post is vacant.

O'Kelly, who is the assistant manager at Bournemouth, still lives in the West Midlands and has told the Bournemouth Daily Echo that he is "perfectly happy" at Dean Court.

The paper maintains that O'Kelly is one of a number of names in the frame to replace Paul Merson who was sacked by the Saddlers last week.

But the 49-year-old is unlikely to apply for the post, although he may be willing to talk to Walsall chairman Jeff Bonser should they approach him.

O'Kelly's playing career spanned nine years and included two spells at Walsall where he netted 57 goals in 217 league appearances.

"I am thoroughly enjoying my time at Bournemouth and thoroughly enjoying the experience of working with Sean (O'Driscoll).

"It's good for your ego to be linked with other jobs, but I'm perfectly happy at Bournemouth."

Speculation linking O'Kelly with the Bescot post first surfaced in yesterday's Wolverhampton Express and Star.

Their story suggested the chance for O'Kelly to return to his former club and strike out on his own as a manager might be "too good to resist".

And it was also reported that although Cherries might demand compensation for O'Kelly, the figure would "unlikely to be beyond Saddlers' means".

O'Kelly, preparing for Cherries' trip to Rotherham tonight, was quoted in the article as saying: "It's always nice to be linked with jobs. I've never been linked with a job like this before so it's flattering."

Former Walsall boss Chris Nicholl and O'Kelly's ex-Saddlers team-mate David Kelly are also in the frame to replace Merson who parted company with the club following a poor run of results.
