News round up

Bedford Town have strengthened their defence, the second-worst in the league, with the signing of experienced centre-back Ben Nugent.

The 33-year-old joins the Eagles from Bangkok FC and brings a wealth of experience, having previously played in the Football League for clubs including Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra, Gillingham and Stevenage.

Nugent, who also spent time with Barnet and Gloucester City, began his career in Cardiff’s academy and has since featured across England and abroad, including spells in Cambodia and Thailand and joins the side as they look to survive their first season back at step two.

Oxford City have signed striker Ashley Hemmings on loan from National League South side Dagenham and Redbridge until the end of the season as they battle for survival.

The former Kidderminster Harriers forward recently ended a short loan spell at Aggborough and now links up with the Hoops ahead of the run-in.

Hemmings enjoyed a prolific 2024/25 campaign in National League North, winning both the golden boot and player of the season awards after scoring 30 goals as Harriers narrowly missed out on the title.

Darlington midfielder Matty Cornish has left the club by mutual consent due to work commitments.

The 27-year-old, who runs a successful green energy business, asked to be released from his contract in order to focus more time on his work.

Cornish joined the Quakers from Marske United in January 2024 and went on to make 77 appearances, scoring 14 goals. He played a key role in Darlington’s “Great Escape” during the 2023/24 season, netting six times – including a long-range strike against Blyth Spartans that was voted the club’s goal of the season.

Manager Steve Watson thanked Cornish for his contribution and wished him well for the future.

Kidderminster Harriers have signed striker Kieren Donnelly on loan from Boston United until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old, a former Aston Villa youngster, is well known in the Midlands after spells with Redditch United, Coleshill Town and Halesowen Town, where he scored 50 goals in 100 appearances.

Donnelly joined Boston in the summer and has netted eight times in 35 appearances in all competitions this season. He will wear the number 10 shirt and goes straight into the squad for Saturday’s trip to Buxton.

Macclesfield say D'Mani Mellor could be set to join Forest Green Rovers after the National League club triggered the release clause in his contract.

Talks are now ongoing between the forward and Forest Green over a potential move. Mellor has been a key performer for the Silkmen, contributing goals and creativity since arriving.

If completed, the transfer would see him reunite with former Macclesfield boss Robbie Savage.
