The proposed new floodlights at Edgar Street should be better for bats, ecology experts have suggested.

James Bissett, from Herefordshire Council's ecology team, has given his thoughts on the new LED floodlights as part of the consultation exercise for planning to be granted.

With the plans to replace the 30-metre pylons and the "outdated" lights with 21-metre, modern, up-to-date and energy-efficient LEDs, the light will be better controlled to avoid unwanted spill and glare affecting nearby homes.

That should also help bats, the ecology expert Mr Bissett suggested.

He said there are light-sensitive protected species, in particular bats, known to be "roosting, foraging and commuting" in the area around the stadium.

In his comment, he said the new floodlights would cut down on stray lighting and there will be the ability for dimming during training and maintenance and when the stadium is used for other activities.

He welcomed the old "inefficient and ‘broad area’ lighting" being replaced and raised no objection.

There are currently no objections to the plan, put forward by stadium director Darren Ball. Comments on application 241159 can be made until June 27, with planners setting July 19 as a target date for a decision.
