2023/24 End Of Season Review

Jason Cowley Was Hereford's Top Scorer Last Season

Hereford historian Ron Parrott looks back at the 2023/24 season.

“Looking back on 2023/24, in my opinion, it was sheer entertainment all the way after four seasons of mediocrity! Sadly, the injury to Andy Williams was a serious setback and put pressure on Jason Cowley. He ended up as our top scorer with just 12 goals, followed by Alex Babos with 11, Andy Williams with 10 and little help from elsewhere. A promotion-winning side really needs a couple of strikers contributing 20+ goals each, backed up by a combination of wingers and/or midfielders contributing 15+ goals per season too.

Also, a successful side will be a settled one and although circumstances with a new manager didn’t help, a total of 54 players used is far too many, even after making allowances for U-18 players being used in the HFA County Cup. However, there were many positives to take away, not least of which was that the entertaining football produced, resulted in an increase in home attendances of almost 40%, rising from 1,862 to 2,597.
Other stats showed that our more cavalier style of football saw us only keep nine clean sheets in the League, compared to 18 last season. Also in need improvement was our disciplinary record, which saw a total of nine sendings-off, the highest total since the early 1980s.

Jason Cowley and Teddy Mee were the only two players to record hat-tricks and Curtis Pond had the honour of being the only ever-present during the League season. We recorded four double wins and only two double losses and we won four games from behind, compared to none last season.

For me, it was sheer enjoyment for most of the season so thank you Mr. Caddis. All we need to do next season is to produce more clean sheets, score more goals, produce  more settled sides and improve on our disciplinary record. No easy task but we know that Mr. Caddis will give 100% effort to achieve this.”
