Plan to tear down iconic Edgar Street floodlights unveiled

Plans have been unveiled to tear down Edgar Street's floodlight pylons and replace them with more up-to-date versions.

The iconic towers which stand tall in each corner of the ground will eventually be replaced, if Herefordshire Council grants planning permission.

Stadium director Darren Ball has applied to the council for planning permission to replace the towers with four columns of LED lighting.

Documents submitted to council planners said there are currently four large pylons that hold the current outdated floodlights.

These will be replaced with modern single-column poles that will have the most up-to-date LED lights fitted.

The poles will be placed in four corners of the ground, each pole diameter is 0.762 meters. Each pole will stand 21 metres in height. According to planning documents for a previous scheme in 2010, the existing floodlights are at least 30m high. Club historian Ron Parrott previously said the current pylons were installed in 1968.

The plans, which have been drawn up to suit the Premier League Stadium Fund, also said, experienced firm Musco Lighting Europe Ltd said its systems can cut operating costs by around 50 per cent, eliminates all maintenance for 10 years, and guarantees the actual performance of the system for 10 years – all covered by a comprehensive 10-year warranty.

Musco has helped draw up the plans and said each column will have four lights on it and are "custom-designed LED luminaires with internal optics and external visors, proper column height and locations" which will control where the light goes and avoid unwanted spill and glare affecting nearby homes.

Comments on application 241159 can be made until June 27, with planners setting July 19 as a target date for a decision.
