2023 Hollywood film features actor portrayal of former United player

Hollywood film Gran Turismo, which came out last year and stars Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), David Harbour (Stranger Things) and a young British actor called Archie Madekwe, features an actor portrayal of a former Hereford United player.

One eagle-eyed Bulls fan spotted the connection while watching the film on a flight.

The BN reader who thought it might be of interest to HUFC fans of a certain age said:

Madekwe plays Jann Mardenborough, a teenager from Cardiff who won a professional racing contract with Nissan after being crowned the best 'Gran Turismo' video game player in the world. He went on to race and finish on the podium in Le Mans as a result.

I watched the film on a flight and throughout it, there are appearances from Jann's dad, who was a former Cardiff City player. His dad is sceptical about his chances of making any future from video gaming, and wants him to follow his own path into football, which Jann's brother has done as a member of Cardiff's youth setup.  The dad is never named during the film so I had to wait until the end credits to confirm my suspicions, and then until I came off airplane mode to Google it and know for sure!

Jann's dad is Steve Mardenborough, who played 27 games for HUFC in the 1988-89 season. I had a vague memory of him signing from Cardiff and thought that there can't be that many ex-footballers with the name Mardenborough knocking about!

So there you go... a bit niche and obscure but might be of interest to anyone who grew up watching the Ian Bowyer era! And there also can't be many HUFC players who have been portrayed in a Hollywood film?!
