John Mills Scores At Rocester In The FA Vase |
For John Mills coming to Hereford was like a dream not only on the pitch but off it as well.
The striker talks about how the supporters would greet him and Pablo Haysham as they arrived at Edgar Street.
"We would be getting out of our car and they would wait," said Mills.
"They would come out and we would sign people's passports.
"If I was injured, Saturday I would go into town and have a bit of lunch and comeback.
"There were hundreds of people in the pubs, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock.
"It took us by surprise actually."
The team won their first game but then lost four.
"It was all well and good having 4,000 people behind you but we walked off and they were booing us.
"Winning the first game was brilliant, the best feeling in the world but these next three or four would like the worst.
"You get booed off, you're scared to make a mistake, you're scared to do anything.
"But then luckily the Gaffer made a few more signing and then we went from strength to strength. We didn't lose too many more after that.
"I got 53 goals and I wasn't starting every week, I couldn't get my head around it.
"I was scoring goal after goal but if I didn't score for a game or two or I wasn't having a very good game he would take me off. It took me a while to get my head around that.
"60th minute, 70th minute I was being subbed off when we needed a goal. I could not get my head around it.
"But that were the levels we went at. We had players all around us who scored goals. It did take a bit of getting used to."
