Substitute Skinner Lifts The Bulls To Trophy Victory

Hereford substitute Aaron Skinner (pictured before kick-off with manager Paul Caddis), who came on at the start of the second half of this afternoon's FA Trophy tie against Redbridge with the captain's armband after Paul Downing came off, was the catalyst who speared a turnaround in his team performance.

Redbridge lead 1-0 at the break but goals from Ethan Freemantle, Skinner, Koby Arthur and Tom Pugh ensured that the Bulls are in the hat for the second round of the competition.

On a mild, damp and slightly gusty day manager Paul Caddis stuck to what he said after last Tuesday's 4-1 over Banbury by selecting a much changed starting eleven no doubt in his mind that there are two difficult away games this coming week.

He gave a start to goalkeeper Shay Sterry, who celebrates is 17th birthday today. In front of him were captain Paul Downing, Kyle Howkins, Jordan Cranston and Ollie Southern.

In midfield were Lassana Mendes, Tom Pugh, Koby Arthur, Connor Stanley and Jack Tolley with Ethan Freemantle up top.

On the bench were Pond, Skinner, Livingstone, Teixeira,Ceesay, Rooney and Walby, a youth team player.

Hereford played towards the Blackfriars End in the first half but seemed to lack any urgency to take the lead. Whilst they might have had more possesion than the opposition they seemed content to knock the ball around in midfield. And as for chances Redbridge had several, Hereford few.

The referee was Matthew McQuillan and it wasn't long he got his book out.

Connor Stanley was fouled and Redbridge's number 7 was carded.

A Redbridge free kick was scrambled away for a corner, a few minutes later another free kick was sent well wide of the goal.

As for the Bulls Cranston and Tolley combined well on the left. Arthur crossed from the right towards goal with both Freemantle and Tolley well placed but was put out for a corner.

Cranston took the corner and a back heel from Stanley fed Cranston but he could not get the ball to Freemantle who was well positioned.

A minute or so later Redbridge took the lead. A poor pass back towards Howkins wasn't dealt with and Sterry raced towards the ball. James Barlow found space to find the back of the net.

Just before the break Hereford had a free kick in a good position after Stanley was brought down. He took the kick but it went straight into the wall.

Half time: Hereford 0 Redbridge 1

It emerged after the game that Hereford manager had planned to take off Paul Downing at the break and bring on Aaron Skinner. However at the time it was thought Downing might be injuried when he did not come out for the second period.

As it turned out Skinner with the captain's armband seemed to lift the spirits of the rest of the players along with the supporters.

It wasn't long before Hereford, now playing towards the Meadow End, had equalised. Before that Arthur had a decent chance but Wheatley was equal to it.

On the 50th minutes a cross from Cranston found Freemantle who managed to poke the ball into the net.

Five minutes later Skinner makes it 2-0. A ball out of the Redbridge defence fell to the Hereford captain and he made no mistake from 18 yards shooting through a number of players.

It was all Hereford at this stage and it was no surprise when on 65 minutes it was 3-1.

Tolley ran with the ball down the left side beating several players before slotting the ball across the face of goal. Stanley couldn't quite get there but Arthur did.

Next a chance for Ollie Southern from a Cranston corner. He rose above a crowd of players but couldn't direct his header on target.

And then a goal mouth scramble but no goal.

Tolley came close to making it four but the keeper was alert to the danger. Then on 86 minutes the fourth for Hereford.

Tom Pugh was the scorer.

Redbridge had tired and Hereford had taken full advantage.

So it's into the draw for the third round on Monday and £3750 in the bank.

Aaron Skinner was the sponsor's man of the match. He only played in the second half.

But he scored the all important second goal and seemed to inspire the rest of the team.

A mention to for Arwyn Walby who made his debut for the Bulls on 80 minutes.

 The attendance was 1332.
