Trouble at Banbury

Clashes have taken place between Hereford and Banbury fans during and after today’s match in Oxfordshire.

The game was segregated, and there was a heavy Thames Valley Police presence around the town centre. Banbury United’s ground is only accessible along a narrow road, which means there is a corridor from the main road and town centre to the stadium.

There was some disorder at half time, when an individual in the Banbury area threw beer over a gate, next to the away portable toilets. Bins and traffic cones were then thrown. A Hereford fan (pictured) was injured, receiving a gash to his head. It is understood that he received treatment in hospital before travelling back to Hereford.

After the match, the two groups of supporters were kept apart by a police line, with Hereford fans leaving the ground first. Close to the police line, stones and bottles were thrown, with Banbury fans who’d been in the home end held back until the crowd had cleared. The police escorted Hereford fans away from the ground, up the narrow road towards the town centre and railway station.

After a few minutes, Banbury fans were also escorted away from the ground. The police then dealt with further incidents of trouble near the ground and railway station.
