That Number Nine Is Massive For Hereford Said Purdie

Rob Purdie spoke in length to Trevor Owens after Monday's game against Brackley.

Below are some more extracts as broadcast on BBC Hereford and Worcester.

Asked about next season Purdie explained his view.

"We want a couple of youngsters from a youth team that you gamble on," said the former Hereford player.

"They give you two months of good football because then they get dragged down because they've never played mens football and they start to struggle. If they work out for you then great.

"And then if you can get some bodies say around October/November who are not playing for their team come in and gives you that little bit extra.

"But first and foremost they've got to get seven or eight players that are the spine of the team and they've got to play week in, week out.

"You've got your Brandon Hall, may be Luke Haines, Tom Owen-Evans. You've got to find a striker who is going to get you 15 plus goals.

"And then you've got your loan players either side, you've got a player who is good for half a season. And then you've got something to build on."

Owens mentioned Mo Touray who lead the line in the first half against Brackley.

"The game plan first half was that a lot of the balls went into Touray and a lot of them weren't good enough which he had little chance of keeping.

"Then sometimes there were some good balls which he should have done better. The team didn't help him because they didn't get around him enough.

"Graham Turner used to say you are only as good as your centre forward so as a team you can pass the ball along the back, pass the ball out wide, you can pass it through mid-field but if that striker will not hold that ball up then...

"Look at their team, Lowe up front and Gordon when he was on, they gave our back two and three a real hard time. They kept the ball, they brought people in. When they took Gordon off they lost that base to build off and that was the same with Hereford first half.

"So that striker whether it's somebody who plays off the shoulder and stretches the game or whether its somebody who holds the ball up is vital for Hereford next season.

"The ones that they've had have come and gone and they need to find that player who can play 30 to 40 games a season. He does well enough and he keeps his place. Not well we'll bring him off at half time or he can come on with 30 minutes to go. They need that number nine.

"That number nine is massive for them to get the goals they need to progress."
