Hereford United played Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on January 4th 1958.
They lost the game 3-0.
According to John Williamson's book the Hereford United story - 'On January 4th 1958 Edgar Street was packed.
It seemed as though the whole population of the city of Hereford was crammed into the ground. The official attendance was 18,114, which is still a ground record and the gross gate totalled £2,966.
The attraction was Hereford United's first competitve match against a First Division side.'
Here's a link to some black and white video from that day including pictures of the large crowd at the game.
