The Best Way To Help Stevenage

Bill Thomas suggests how the EFL could help Stevenage

"I was delighted to learn that promotion and relegation will still apply in all three EFL divisions. It was the right decision. As things stand it looks like Stevenage will be relegated. But surely the best way to help them would be to give them a better chance to get back up, by giving the National League more promotion places from next season onwards.

This change could be much better for Stevenage in the long term than a reprieve. With more promotion places they could probably get back reasonably quickly, and enjoy the experience. If they had been given a reprieve they may have struggled again, and been relegated next season anyway.

In my opinion, a more equitable system is long overdue, and League One, League Two, and the National League should all have the same number of promotion places. Three up from each, or four up from each. Either way, National League North and South would both still have two promotion places, and the Championship would still have three. I also think it would be a great idea to use the 6-team play-off system in all leagues, to maximise interest.

Below step 2, the step 3 to 7 leagues were null and voided, which I think was very unfair. But it does provide an opportunity to scrap the crazy idea to expand the step 2 leagues to 24 teams. I think this opportunity should be taken. The step 3 leagues can still all have two promotion places, with both step 2 leagues having four relegation places. There is nothing wrong with four relegation places out of 22 teams.

I suspect that the combination of Bury's expulsion from the EFL, and the step 3 to 7 leagues being voided may mean that one of the National League divisions will be a team short next season. My guess is it will be National League North, so we could just relegate three for one season to make the numbers right. But I do think that is very important to make up for this season by giving the step 3 to 7 leagues as many promotion places as possible, from next season onwards.

As a fan, the main thing I ask for is excitement. So my message to the football powers is to maximise promotion and relegation at all levels. As well as helping Stevenage, this would be better for all."
