We've Not Lost This Year Said Slade

Russell Slade was decidedly upbeat following Hereford 2-1 win against Kidderminster this afternoon. It was the Bulls first home win since September 28th.

"We've not lost this year," Slade told the local media.

"I changed what we were about today, a couple of reasons really, I wanted to go up against Kidderminster a little bit more so we matched them up with three (four? -ed) at the back, three in midfield, two and one upfront.

"I think it worked to an extent because we had a bit more of the ball than we had at their place certainly in the first half but we looked nice and solid I felt today.

"We needed to protect our young trainee goalkeeper (Brandon Powell), we were without three center-halves so Pollock went in there and done a good job and Pope's second opportunity at the back with Jordan.

"By and large they've defended and protected the goal which was important today really well and reduced Kidderminster to just a couple of chances, I think there was a header first half that wizzed past and then very little really.

"They got themselves in injury time which is a little bit disappointing but more importantly we did enough to score two goals at home today and win a very important game."

"Brandon just loved it, he just loved it. And when he went down I was thinking has he got himself injured, no no just killing a bit of time gaffer, I'm okay!

"I think he's really enjoyed it.

"I didn't say anything to him last night. I knew it was an issue last night when Brandon (Hall) had texted me the message, I wanted him to have a good night's sleep so I didn't tell him until he got here today.

"The lads gave him a round of applause in the changing room and I gave him a right big cuddle because he done brilliant."

Slade was also pleased with his strikeforce.

"Good energy and Victor has got that little bit of pace and the thing about him is that he is un-predictable in what he might do next so difficult to mark that way even when you are man to man. He's a threat.

"I'm delighted he felt confident enough and also as a young player to take the penalty, very important for us. He's put it in the net with some authority and got us in front and rightly so because we deserved that.

"Because it was a possession based side that we were up against today we needed to keep a nice solid shape and then when we do win the ball to be able to break.

"Which is exactly what we did for the second goal, Dawson ran down the pitch on the left hand side, managed to get some kind of cross in and their players were running back towards their goal and they've put it in the net for us. It was nice for us to have a little bit of fortune because we have been a little bit short of that."

It's Gateshead on Saturday.

"I think generally our performances at home have been fairly solid, yes there is room for improvement I know that, but away from home we've got to stop conceeding cheap goals and start making silly mistakes and stay in homes.

"When we do stay in games as we have today we gone and produced a performance which have given us three points.

"I hope to have more options for the trip. Josh Gowling hopefully will start feeling a little bit better because he's had a very long bug which has kept him out so hopefully he puts himself up but he hasn't played a lot so in terms of fitness and playing a lot of minutes might be an issue. So we'll have to monitor that carefully.

"Obviously the goalkeeper situation is a concern as well.

"We're setting off for Gateshead on Friday afternoon. In terms of our preparation that will be loads better."

Slade was asked about Dawson.

"I think it's up to January 8th. There are a few players we need to sit down with now with contracts coming up and that a process.

"I brought him to the football because he's played for me before so we would like him to stay.

"There's Jack Bodenham as well. He's still got a swollen ankle but that another one for consideration as well."

Mike Symons has moved to Weston.

"Great servant to the football club and a very good guy.

"He knows he's getting on a little bit now and wants to play first team football.

"He's such a good lad I couldn't stop him. I like him around the place and I know he can come on in games for ten, fifteen minutes and make a difference.

"But in terms of longevity he's not now going to be the future of the club going forward as such, so at some stage you have to say thank you for everything you've done.

"In my short time working with him he's been brilliant."
