Southport manager Liam Watson said it felt great to leave Edgar Street last night with the three points and gave credit to his players after 'nightmare traffic' on the trip down.
Watson said he couldn't ask for more from his players, who went into the game on the back of a 2-0 win in the FA Cup against National League side Boreham Wood. In their last league game they beat Kidderminster 4-1 as they started to turn around their poor start to the season.
"It feels great. It was really important to me and it's our own fault we got ourselves into the position we are after such a bad start," said Watson.
"We needed to back up the Kidderminster win which we have done. It's great, it's always difficult.
"After the Lord Mayor's show at the Boreham Wood game you've always got a little bit of that in your mind.
"Horrible trip down, a nightmare in the traffic, but they got there and got the job down so full credit to the players."
Watson didn't feel Danny Greenslade should've been sent off when he brought down Brad Bauress in the box, but prior to taking the lead from the spot kick, he thought his side could already have been 2-0 up with chances that came from right-winger Dion Charles.
"I thought we stood up, we committed. I thought there were one or two iffy challenges go flying in, but we got away with riding them through.
"Got the goals at great times, but I didn't think we managed the game in the last 20 minutes great. We got drawn into a little bit of stupidness.
"I couldn't ask for more. Jordan (Archer) is off the mark, Dion (Charles) is on the scoresheet yet again and Dean Winnard keeps popping up.
"Before the red card we'd had two great chances so we should've been in the lead. I was surprised it was red, I thought it would've been yellow and a penalty.
"But I don't actually understand the rules anymore so I'll leave that to the ref and whatever rule they want to play on the day.
"We've had stuff against us this season, we've had lots of stuff, missed penalties and one thing or another.
"Now it has gone for us, which we always said if you kept believing, kept on working hard and kept on playing well it would turn. Now we just need to go to Boston and back this performance up."
