Report: Hereford 0 - Southport 3

Hereford's poor run of form continued as a 3-0 loss at home to Southport made it 13 league games without a win for the Bulls.

Danny Greenslade conceding a penalty and getting sent off with 22 minutes on the clock made it look like it was going to be another one of those days - and it was.

Ahead of the game it was pleasing to see not only Mike Symons and Eliot Richards' names back on the team sheet, even if only on the substitutes bench, but Hereford finally returned to a 4-4-2 formation.

Ryan Green misses out through injury as Ethan Wassall and Tommy O'Sullivan drop to the bench as Cullinane-Liburd, Mike McGrath and Kyle Finn returned.

Other than both goalkeepers being called into action within the first four minutes to punch clear promising balls, it was a relatively slow start to the game.

Having already been beaten once, Danny Greenslade was nowhere to be seen when Dion Charles was sent on his way down the right wing, with the midfielder able to cut into the box almost unchallenged. Seeing a good opportunity to try his luck, Charles struck the ball towards goal but it was parried by Yates, and thankfully Jack Sampson didn't respond quickly enough to prod home the rebound.

Hereford were the a goal and a man down by. the 24th minute after a foul by Danny Greenslade in the box. Keen to exploit the Bulls down the right, Southport's Bradley Bauress had Greenslade well-beaten but was then brought-down by the 24-year-old in the area.

Up stepped Charles who drilled the ball down the middle before running off to celebrate in front of an extremely irritated Meadow End.

Either side of a great chance for Southport to double their lead in the 41st minute, two free kicks in decent positions 25-yards out were just wasted by Hereford who were lacking an tenacity needed to fight their way back into the game which was being controlled by Sandgrounds.

The chance itself saw right-winger Dion Charles show the Meadow End what he's capable of as he burst into the area, before forcing Yates into making a save low down to his left.

Another two chances followed for Southport as they tightened their grip on the game, the first saw a loose ball fly around the area before Cullinane-Liburd finally put his boot through it.
The second chance should've been a sitter as Jack Sampson somehow missed the strike. Dion Charles was finding it far too easy to stroll down the right before whipping in a cross, but after this one flashed across the face of goal somehow Sampson missed it at the far post.

But if the challenge wasn't already looking daunting enough, conceding in first half stoppage time was bad, but almost inevitable. As a corner was delivered into the box, there was Dean Winnard waiting in the box to smash home in a crowded penalty area.

After another poor first half performance from Hereford, a chorus of boos rang around Edgar Street at the break with a big half coming up.

HT: Hereford 0 - Southport 2

The second half started off on a similar note to how the first ended, with another three chances worthy of goals for Southport. The first saw Dion Charles exploit Hereford down the right again, before cutting in and fire over the bar. A shot from substitute Jordan Archer and Jordan Richards' free kick both saw Matt Yates called into action, without really testing him.

The introduction of Mike Symons to the field did give fans a slight lift as he made his National League North debut for Hereford, but Reagan Ogle had a speculative effort loop over the bar as Southport looked for a third.

That third goal followed in the 67th minute as the game was put to bed. A corner was whipped into the box and the unmarked Jordan Archer rose to meet it and headed home.

A defence error almost saw Hereford slip further behind, but thankfully after captain Harvey Smith lost possession and Charles was played through, he left it too late to shoot and fired into the side netting.

Neither side really threatened within the last 15 minutes of the game, other than a few half-chances for the Whites. Ultimately another poor performance and something needs to change.
