McIndoe Praises Turner At Hereford

In his recently released autobiography titled Wildling, former player Michael McIndoe heaps praise on Graham Turner and how he ran Hereford United.

Former scout Ron Jukes traced McIndoe and offered him a place in Turner's squad at Edgar Street which McIndoe didn't hestitate in accepting.

'Considering the mearge resources Graham had at Hereford, it was a very well-run club and ruthlessly organised.

'I take my hat off to him as he did a great job.'

McIndoe had problems with both drink and drugs before he came to Hereford and Turner felt it would be a good idea to put him in some digs out in the country.

'It was miles away from anywhere so once we were in after training that was it. There was nowhere to go and zero distractions.

'It turned out to be exactly the fresh start I needed.'

McIndoe became close to Gavin Williams who had already been at Hereford for several years.

'Gav is probably one of the funniest footballers you will ever meet.

'We became good friends and eventually went on to play together at three different clubs.'

He made his debut for Hereford in a goal-less draw against Southport on August 19th 2000.

'The Hereford fans were incredibly passionate. The club pulled in around 2000 fans a game which is a great turnout for such a small city.'

One interesting fact revealed by McIndoe was captain John Snape's routine before a game in the dressing room.

'Snape, a physically strong player, would walk around the dressing room shake your hand and headbutt you.

'Not enough to crack a skull but enough to wind you up before a game.'

McIndoe hadn't been at the club that long but in that time had been noticed by several managers.

Firstly Steve Evans then manager of Boston made an offer of £20,000. Then days later Yeovil put in a bid of £25,000 and a deal was done.

'We had a game coming up that Saturday and the gaffer asked if I would play one last match with the team.

'We won 3-0 so it was the perfect way to say goodbye to the Hereford United team.

'I thanked all the staff, especially Graham who joked he needed to sell me to pay the electricity bill. He probably did!

'I still hold Hereford United close to my heart as this was the team that helped me back onto the footballing ladder, and Graham provided me with everything I needed to do this.

'He's a great bloke and I will always be grateful to him for his understanding, his confidence in my ability, and most of all his kindness'.
