For our latest archive article, BN remembers the week John Snape joined Hereford United.
It was in mid-May 1998 that manager Graham Turner revealed he had made an approach to Halesowen about signing mid-fielder Snape. At the time he also tried to sign his team-mate Stuart Evans.
"We have made them both offers and they are thinking them over," said Turner.
"They have both done well. Evans is big, strong and quick whilst Snape is a great competitor. Both would be good signings."
A few days later Snape had signed. He left Halesowen after a six season stay. However he was to remain part-time as he didn't want to give up his work as an electrician.
"I'm 29 now and I want the chance to play at the highest level," said Snape.
"I've loved my time at Halesowen and I would have loved to have led them into the Conference. To leave them is a big wrench.
"But if I had said 'no' to Hereford I might never have had the chance again.
"This is a new beginning for me. I'm starting afresh and I've got to prove myself on a different stage.
"Mr Turner wants to take the club back into the League and if I can help Hereford achieve that, it would be brilliant."
Snape stayed at Edgar Street for four seasons during which he started 145 League games and scored 10 goals.
