Dudley Tyler Remembers

Most of the 1971/72 Hereford United squad were back together at the Green Dragon this afternoon. Later they walked through the town and chatted to supporters and shoppers. They also met the Mayor.

Whilst at the Dragon one of the players, Dudley Tyler, spoke to BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"We've not met on an occasion like this to celebrate since the 25th which was back last century," said Tyler.

"We all did get together six years ago unfortunately for Roger Griffiths' funeral. But I've not met any of them since then.

"You just walk back into this room and it's like we've met again last week. It's always been the same with this group of players.

"I played for lots of different teams over the years but there's none that I can say I keep as close a contact with such a wide group of people than with this side. I can't explain it.

"If you look back at the whole run, we played a lot of games to get to that Newcastle game. It's a shame that technology for keeping films of the games wasn't as it is now, because Ronnie Radford's goal will always live in everybody's memory.

"But there were two or three other goals in that run which were as good.

"Colin's at Newcastle was 25 yards out, Brian Owens' was a very similar shot to Ronnie's except instead of going across the goal it went into the near post. Ken Mallender's goal at Northampton very similar to Ronnie's but from the opposite side.

"We weren't a bad side."
