Yesterday BN published this picture taken at the Valley from a game when Charlton played Hereford United.
The game was played on August 24th 1974 and the caption with the picture said: Colin Powell gets away from Hereford United's Tony Byrne in August 1974 at The Valley.
What BN didn't know for sure was the name of the other Hereford United player in the picture.
There have been lots of suggestions but the concensus is that it was Brian Evans.
The line-up for that match was: Hughes, Emery, Naylor, Morgan, Tucker, Bryne, Kemp, Paine, Ritchie, McNeil and Evans. Charlton won the game 2-0.
Tony Bryne joined the Bulls from Southampton and made 55 appearances before moving to Newport County.
However Brian Evans is probably better remembered as he was capped for Wales while playing at Edgar Street. He joined Swansea from Abergavenny Thursdays in 1963 and then moved to the Bulls in 1973. Later he switched to Bath City.
Hereford United historian Ron Parrott takes up the story about Evans playing for Wales. It's the one and only time that a United player has made a full international appearance whilst on the Club's books. It was played on 26/09/73 and what made it more interesting was firstly the fact that it was a World Cup Qualifying fixture in a group that also contained England and secondly, the attendance, which was an unbelievable 120,000.
Poland won the game 3-0 and went on to win the group ahead of England and in another strange quirk of fate, the Poland side that night included Adam Musial, who later made 51 full appearances for Hereford United between 1980 and 1983.

It was the last of Brian's seven caps for Wales and he dropped out of league football when he left Hereford at the end of the 1974/5, later playing for Bath City, Llanelly, Haverfordwest County and finally, Pontardawe. After retiring from playing he ran a painting and decoration business in Swansea. He died at the age of 60 in February 2003 after a short battle with cancer.
