The Iron trace their history back to 1899 when Scunthorpe United was formed by the joining of a couple of local sides. Their early years saw them playing in the Midland League before joining the Football League as part of the newly formed Division Three North in 1950 when their debut match was a 0-0 draw against Slopbury Town. The game was played at their "Old Showground" stadium, which remained their home until a move to Glanford Park in 1988.

Glanford Park has a capacity of just over 9000 with visiting fans housed in the South (AMS) Stand, which is all seated. Scunthorpe operate a duel pricing policy with this match being designated as category B meaning expected admission costs of Adults £18, Over 60's and 16-21 £11 and U16's £6. Advance tickets are available from the Club office. The usual refreshments are available including the famed Scunny Bacon Butty, whereas the adjacent retail park has a KFC, McDonalds and a tescos with a café.

By Car - From Hereford, join the M5 at Worcester then the M42 continuing onto the A42. At the Donnington Park junction, join the M1 (North) leaving at J32 to join the M18. Leave the M18 at J5 and at the roundabout, take the third exit onto the M180 (Sign Scunthorpe). After about twelve miles, branch left onto the M181 (Sign Scunthorpe West and Centre). After a further 2.5 miles you will reach a roundabout where you take the third exit onto the A18 (Sign Scunthorpe). Continue on the A18 passing through a couple more roundabouts and a Travelodge. The ground will be visible on your right where you will find a large car park costing £2 per vehicle. Distance is around 175 miles and you should allow not less than three and a half hours. Postcode is DN15 8TD.

Alehouses
There is a Club at the ground called The Iron Bar (who’d have though it) but it's not known if visitors are allowed. The nearest Pub appears to be The Old Farmhouse very close to the ground, but it is strictly a fizzy beer establishment (no colours). Of slightly more interest is The Berkeley Hotel, which does offer a couple of hand pumps for the old Sam Smith Brewery. This one is a five-minute walk from the ground back along the A18 (Doncaster Road). The local Wetherspoons is The Blue Bell Inn on Oswald Road. However, roughly halfway between the Blue Bell and the railway station you will find The Honest Lawyer (yes, really), which often has up to eight or nine pumps and includes many localish small breweries as well as an upstairs eatery. Finally, The Malt Shovel in Ashby High Street is well worth a visit for it's home cooked food and selection of good ale.
