Hereford United will play their first home game of the season this afternoon at 3pm. After two away defeats in the past week, the Bulls will be hoping to break the duck against local rivals Yeovil Town.
With the Bulls now in League One, supporters should see a higher quality football at Edgar Street this season and it is to be hoped that the attendances will reflect this fact.
First day of the season gates have varied over the past few seasons.
Back in 2005, the Bulls last year in the Conference, the first home game was against Scarborough. Just 3105 saw a 4-0 win with new signing Guy Ipoua on good form.
In August 2006, the Bulls lost their first home game back in the League against a lively Lincoln City side by 2-1. The match, which was on a Tuesday evening, was watched by 4405.
Twelve months ago the first home game against Rotherham resulted in a 0-0 draw. This game attracted 3566 including 673 from Rotherham.
This afternoon supporters, who are yet to watch a match, will be able to cast their eyes over several of Graham Turner's new signings. Certainly two new goalkeepers, a central defender, a winger and probably two new forwards will be in the squad.
Yeovil should bring around 500/600 supporters to Edgar Street this afternoon. It will be disappointing if the gate is far below 4,000. (Supporters can predict the result and attendance by going to the Bulls News Prediction League on the left of this article)
Meanwhile just Dean Beckwith remains with Hereford United from the opening day's squad against Scarborough in August 2005. The team that day was:
Mawson, James, Mkandawire, Beckwith, Green, Jeannin, Coldicott, Ferrell, Brady, Stansfield, Ipoua. Subs: Blewitt, Brown, Purdie, Stanley, Carey-Bertram.
