It was noticable that at Hereford United's first home game of the season, there were several spaces not yet filled by advertising boards.
Sometimes called perimeter boards, the cost of these has risen over recent years at Edgar Street no doubt to reflect the move up from the Conference to League One and the greater TV exposure that should bring.
The current cost of boards at Hereford United is as follows:
Ground Level Site £1100.00
Middle Level Site £660.00
These charges are the same for any position at the ground and VAT is not charged.
If all the 'board' space (assuming a board to be around 18ft by 3ft) is sold at the published prices then the revenue to the club could be at least £80,000.
In the 2006/07 season (the last figures available) the combined income from advertising boards and programme advertising was £56,000. Programme advertising probably came to about £10,000 so the income from the boards was around £46,000.
Comparison with other League One clubs is difficult as not all publish their prices.
One that does is Swindon Town. Their charges range from £500 plus VAT for crowd facing boards and up to £3,000 plus VAT for prominent TV facing sites.
At Northampton charges start at £750, no mention of VAT here, to £2,500 for the best sites. At Tranmere rates start at £1,000 and peak at £1,500.
This quick comparison suggests charges at Edgar Street for advertising boards appears reasonable particularly for those boards behind the goals.
