Ten Years Ago - Keyte Breaks His Silence

Continuing BN's look back at the setting uo of Hereford FC, we republish an interview with former chairman David Keyte originally posted on January 30th 2015.

Former Hereford United chairman David Keyte spoke to BBC Hereford and Worcester this afternoon. He says he was prompted to do so after seeing quotes from HUST vice-chairman Martin Watson on Bulls News earlier today.

"Thank you for giving me a bit of airtime, as you know you and I could talk for three hours on this subject," Keyte told Trevor Owens.

"I've kept my own counsel for the last eight or nine months but there's been an awful lot of things said, usually at my expense, that have just sort of supported these various agendas which different factions have worked on to their own ends.

"I didn't hear the interview this morning but I tend to read Bulls News for my sins and I noticed the quote from Martin that said that the club had lost £1.5M in my four years which is quite frankly absolute nonsense.

"I just felt this was the one thing which would start me getting my two penny-worth into all this.

"The first year in my tenure we made a profit of £431K. If you recall we bought back the leases and wrote off the £1M debt to the Richardson Brothers which gave us a net profit of £431K end of year.

"The next year was the year we were relegated from the Football League and we chased that a bit, we tried to avoid it and we ran up a loss of about £400K.

"And then in our first year in the Conference we had a similar high £400K loss. Technically the final year of my four years I don't think anybody to this day has closed the accounts off because we finished before the year end.

"But if you say a similar £400K or so, the loss in the four years was less than £1M and the directors at the time funded that £1M out of their own personal money."

Keyte was then asked if he regretted not selling to the Supporters Trust.

"I didn't have the option, they never came back.

"We met the supporters trust group which significently did not include Chris Williams, their chairman, who was unavailable. But Martin and four or five other people came along.

"We met. We being the board of directors, Dave Preedy, Bob Pritchard, Colin Addison and we listened and we heard their offer of £1 which you might appreciate from a personal point of view for all of us was quite close to insulting.

"We asked the question which you would expect in a business meeting proof of funding, as we were looking for £300K to pay immediate debts, which they couldn't supply.

"We wanted to know who would do the due diligence for them, bearing in mind they were a community at that time of about 400 members. We needed some idea of who would come in and do due diligence and they couldn't give us an answer to that."

Owens then pointed out that the claim always was that you (Keyte) would not let them see the books.

"David Keyte refused to let HUST see the books, David Keyte murdered our club. The facts are we left that meeting and the next day Martin Watson put out an agreed statement, which I had agreed - he had been good enough to share it with me, which said 'it was an amicable meeting and that they had left to seek advice from Supporters Direct'.

"And it was on these very topics of how do we accommodate due diligence in a private limited company when we are trying to talk for four hundred members and how do we give proof of funding when we have about £5K in the bank but we think through pledges we could get to whatever money they thought they could.

"I've read since from Chris William's quote that £220K was offered. Never, ever offered in that meeting. He wasn't there and then they never came back.

"So we were left with two outside investors to choose between and rightly or wrongly we went with Agombar.

"I'm not going to speak for the last period that he was involved and Lonsdale because quite frankly it was shocking.

"But we had sold having decided as a board we could go no further. Personal finances. We could take it no further. We needed to find outside investment which we were publicly saying for the last six months of our tenure. So let's clear that one up for once and for all."

Owens suggested that the setting up of a phoenix club was a sensible move.

"You could call it a sensible move. This Hereford FC was opened on April 1st 2014 by two people named as directors, John Hale and Chris Williams.

"When it became clear that Agombar was going to fail, they started to introduce that publicly as the saviour. It had been opened on April 1st when a lot of people were still trying to fundraise for the old club.

"It will all be opinions won't it. But as I speak now there will be half of Hereford saying let's not listen to him he killed our club. But the facts are that there are some interesting twists of personalities.

"How could the HUST be making independent decisions on behalf of their members when their chairman Chris Williams was already set up as a director of Hereford FC.

"How can HUST make independent decisions rather than just go with there's no other choice but to go in with these mysterious benefactors who could have, probably could have come forward and saved the 90 year old club at no more, lots of figures have been banded about Trevor, but I know for a fact that Andrew Green, the Agombar accountant, and Lonsdale himself were arguing between whether it could be £700K or £750K."

Finally Owens asked Keyte whether he regretted selling to Agombar given 'you said it's not the vicar coming to buy the football club' and it was obvious he wasn't going to pass the FA's fit and proper person test.

"Well it was more about the case that the previous directors had decided to call it a day and he was the only person that came forward."

D'Ath Injury Could Keep Him Out For Long Period

An injury to Hereford's Lawson D'Ath could keep him side-lined for an unknown period.

Hereford manager Paul Caddis has told BBC Hereford and Worcester that the midfielder could be out for the forseeable future.

"D'Ath came off against Southport with something he was extremely worried about'

"We've had him scanned, we think he might have done something to his knee, whether it is season ending we don't know, we are waiting for results.

"He will be out for the forseeable."

Return Of The Saints

Following a return to the sweet smell of success in midweek at Peterborough, Hereford FC return to the burgers-onions-cider-fags-nearly-new-Christmas-aftershave smell of Edgar Street on Saturday, where they host high-flying and in-form Brackley Town.

In August, a superb late goal from Tate Campbell secured the points for Hereford at Brackley for the first time in a lot of attempts, so they’ll be looking to do the double here, which would neatly put to bed any nonsense about the Saints being something of a bogey team.

Brackley are generally no-nonsense, well-drilled, efficient, and strong in all areas, physically and technically. They were due to host Kidderminster on Tuesday but it was postponed, which is a bit of a shame as it looked like a game that would have taken a fair bit out of them ahead of this one.

They’ve been flying of late, winning five of their last six games, and beat Spennymoor 4-1 at home last Saturday. That form has seen them shoot into the play-off positions, where traditionally they will now stay for the rest of the season before all their wheels fall off in spectacular fashion in the play-offs. They were play-off losers again last season for the umpteenth time, and had to regroup in the summer, get the chequebook back out, and give it yet another go to try to get out of the National League North.

Manager Gavin Cowan signed an extended contract in the middle of last season, and has looked to be a good fit at the club, but he’ll have to find a way to ensure that the form they’re currently in continues so that they actually finish top, because the play-offs don’t like them one bit.

Old boys Matt Lowe and Shane Byrne returned to the club from Accrington and Kiddy respectively in the summer. Lowe has six goals this season and Byrne is keeping former Bull Tommy O’Sullivan out of the side.

Up front, Connor Hall is generally good for a goal every other game at this level. He was a big signing for them over the summer, and their rocket-propelled thrust into the top four has coincided with him finding his scoring form. He’s got ten for the season, with six of those coming in his last six games.

Instantly recognisable big beard Danny Newton, usually a lively threat for them up top, has been out injured since November.

Ex-Bull Zac Lilly is now an established part of the Brackley defence, and George Carline will be on long throw duty for them.

Morgan Roberts, so effective for Banbury against Hereford a couple of seasons ago, is now at Brackley and has five goals from midfield.

Something the Brackley defenders didn’t like at all last season was being hurried and harried and hassled by Jason Cowley, something he is of course an absolute master at. Their back four can be rock solid when it’s allowed to be, but when it’s constantly niggled at it gets grumpy and therefore fallible. Captain Gareth Dean in particular was unsettled by the tactic, which was nice to see as he’s absolutely cruised through some games between these teams without a glove being laid on him.

The Bulls have hopefully put a dismal run of form in January behind them by finishing the month on a high with three points on Tuesday. If promotion is a realistic aim, being able to beat Brackley at home in front of a crowd the visitors can only dream of should be a given.

On the good news front, Matt Preston and Aaron Skinner could be back soon, although possibly not soon enough for this one, certainly in Skinner’s case. On the strange news front, Preston Bitemo went into his injury absence with a bad back and reportedly is coming out of it with one leg longer than the other. I’m not sure what sort of specialist does that, but I hope they don’t come near me.

If returning defender Levi Andoh can contribute to keeping Connor Hall off the scoresheet he’ll have had a good second Bulls debut. The York loanee is back at Edgar Street for the rest of the season, and if he’s recovered from a long-term back injury (a back injury that doesn’t seem to have had any sort of effect on the length of either of his legs) he’ll add significant threat going forward, and a never-dull approach to his defensive duties. He’s also a good deal more athletic than the mental image I had of the bruiser Paul Caddis was describing as an imminent arrival after the Radcliffe loss.

Connor Hall may well be scoring a goal a game, but so is Yusifu Ceesay. The winger has three in three, and will be a marked man, so an over-reliance on long diags out to him will be precisely what the opposition will be expecting. Can Paul Caddis and Adam Rooney come up with an alternative plan or two to outflank Gavin Cowan on the tactical front? A right-sided Andoh-White combo full of tricks and pace looks like a viable alternative.

It’s Spennymoor next at Edgar Street, and to make things even more challenging the meat in the Brackley-Spennymoor sandwich is the small matter of Tuesday night’s mega-trip to South Shields. What’s really needed, to ensure that the play-off challenge remains realistic, is now building on Tuesday’s win with some consistency and a long unbeaten run.

Injury Update From Caddis

Paul Caddis has given an update about players carrying injuries.

"We train on a Thursday night and ten minutes before the end Matt Preston got injuried. It was before the Warrington game was called off.

"Hopefully he'll be training maybe next week.

"Aaron Skinner is back in with the squad, he's back on the pitch which is brilliant just to see him smiling again. We're hopeful we can get some sessions into him.

"We found out Preston Bitemo had a stress fracture but we managed to get him to see someone.

"Basically he's got one leg longer than the other so we need to get to the bottom of that."

News Round Up

Hereford FC are holding their AGM tomorrow evening. As well as reviewing the latest accounts, there will no doubt be questions on various other subjects.

Talking Bull needs contributions for its next issue which is set to be published before the home game on February 23rd. There are suggestions that the fanzine may not be published next season.

A Fans Forum will be held on Friday February 7th at Edgar Street. Chairman Chris Ammonds and manager Paul Caddis will be there.

Radio Hereford FC are on the look out for more commentators.

Not Been Easy For Andoh Recently

Levi

Andoh is back with Hereford until the end of the season.

Life hasn't been easy for the 24 year old defender recently as York manager Adam Hinshelwood told the York Press.

Andoh originally joined York in the summer of 2023 but an spinal injury sustained in August kept him out for much of the season.

As part of the recovery process he went out on loan to Darlington in August 2004, then a spell with Truro.

He returned to York but then sadly lost his father.

“It was very sad news and we gave him, rightly so, the time that he needed to be with his family," said Hinshelwood.

Hopefully the loan at Hereford will allow him to focus on football.

"I’m delighted that he can now focus, get regular game time again and get minutes under his belt. It’s a club that he knows well, so I think that’ll really help him as well.

"We wish him nothing but success between now and the end of the season."

White Impressed Caddis

Jayden White started for Hereford at Peterborough Sports last night and afterwards manager Paul Caddis spoke about the attacking player.

"He's done really well when he's played.

"Then he came out of the team for a little bit.

"But he's still got more and I'll continue to be on his case.

"He's skillfull, he's difficult to play against and he works extremely hard.

"We'll continue working with him.

"Dylan Mitchell, I probably made a mistake and should have played him on Saturday just for his energy.

"Babos was back to signs of what we saw last year.

"Tate Campbell sat in the middle of the pitch.

"Ryan Bartley came off at half time Saturday, young lad could have just buckled, I thought he was excellent today besides an excellent Kyle Howkins.

"We do still need reinforcements, we went through a bit of a tough spell, we dried up a little bit to be honest.

"We are always looking to improve."

I'm Relieved To Be Honest Said Caddis

Yusifu Ceesay

Following Hereford's 1-0 win at Peterborough Sports last night, manager Paul Caddis spoke to the local media.

"I'm relieved to be honest," said Caddis.

"It's been a tricky couple of weeks, not for the lack of effort or anything like that, so really pleased.

"It was a professional performance.

"We turned up a little bit late because we got stuck in traffic.

"You are always mindfull as a manager how you are going to start, I thought we started brilliant, so we might deliberately be late every week.

"The players were a credit to themselves, they dug deep, all the credit is to the players in the dressing room."

After a poor run the main task was to get a win.

"Was the performance great? Absolutely not. But it was full of endeavour, full of character.

"I said to the players before the game go back to the way you were when you were five, six, seven years old, the basics of football, passing, talking to each other, tackling, running.

"When you are going through a bit of a bad spell you have to re-set, you don't go back to right I'm going to try and beat three players, you go back to the basics."

Caddis spoke about Sports.

"They are a big physical team, they've come off the back of a brilliant result at the weekend when they beat Kings Lynn, they've been on good form.

"So we knew it was going to be tough place, coming here on a Tuesday night.

"If there's one negative we should have scored a couple more on the counter but there again I thought the team as a whole was excellent.

"And a clean sheet, we've been crying out for clean sheets.

"We move onto the weekend."

Ceesay scored the only goal on 34 minutes.

"Ceesay that's three in three, he's a real threat for us.

"At times we rely too much on him and that's me being honest but that's a credit to him because of what he can offer us.

"I thought Jayden on the other side offered us a lot as well.

"We've got good attacking players, we've just been a bit out of form."
