In his post match interview after yesterday's 2-2 draw against Brackley, Hereford interim manager Yan Klukowski was asked about Jack Holmes suddenly leaving the club.
"I received a text message from Jack on Friday evening after the game," said Klukowski.
"It said he wanted to leave the football club. He didn't think he had the right mentality to be in a relegation scrap.
"And he wanted to go and play football because he needed to look after himself.
"Disappointing that a player has decided to look after himself rather than the group of players that he's fought for all season.
"I thought he had a duty to the club to stick around and maybe be that player that sparks us and got the points to keep us up regardless of whether he's involved or not. He still had a part to play.
"Look we wish Jack all the best. I think he'll regret that decision.
"But at the moment we need players who when you are in the trenches you want certain people along side you.
"Someone like Aaron who has put himself before the team because he wants to play centre half, he sees himself playing there.
"But I asked him to play up front and he's done a fantastic job for the team.
"He's put the team first as opposed to Jack who has decided to look after himself."
Klokowski then explained why Holmes didn't play against Leamingtom.
"He's played a lot of games for me but one goal isn't enough.
"So he had to come out of the side because his work-rate wasn't to the desired level and that's why he wasn't involved against Leamington because he didn't train properly in the week.
"Tough decisions that I have to make as a manager but we're in a position where we are not safe so we have to have people who are committed to the football club, to the team."
Klukowski later confirmed that Holmes was dual-registered so he can play for his former team.
