The National North season is set to start on Saturday August 6th.

News Round Up

Chesterfield have 'retained' former Hereford defender Jamie Grimes for next season.

Grimsby have sold 11,655 tickets for their National League Final against Solihull at the London Stadium.

Chorley's central defender Lewis Baines has joined Altrincham.

Bath City has sold 230 season tickets to date.

Dartford have appointed former Woking boss Alan Dowson as their new manager. He replaces Steve King.

Former Hereford winger Jamie Molyneux has rejoined Stratford Town.

Bowen's Rise From Conference To England

Jarrod Bowen has been asked about his rise from playing for Hereford United to being in the England squad.

He admitted the thoughts of putting on an English shirt were 'a million miles away' at that time.

"A million miles away, at the time it was Conference football for my local team and that was it.

“Obviously you have dreams but you don’t think of someone from Hereford, to get a move to Hull in the first place, it was just playing for my local team and just playing week in, week out in the Conference.

“Sometimes I sit back and look back at where we’ve come from, and especially being in an England camp now – not being big-headed, I’ve got to take my hat off to myself from where I’ve come from and what I’ve done.

“It is everything. Everything you dream of when you’re growing up and to get the call, obviously it’s an honour and a privilege of mine.”

400 Season Tickets Sold At Hereford To Date

Hereford FC have sold 400 season tickets to date according to the club.

We also have Pips Cider on hand to quench our thirst.

Meanwhile tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm there is an event which although featuring a former rugby player may be of interest to those who follow football as well.

Steve Thompson was in the England squad that won the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

He was in the front row at the heart of the scrum - one of sport's most destructive impacts.

He remembers nothing about playing that day.

Now he has early-onset dementia and is campaigning to improve the game and safeguard players.

He will be talking to former player Clive Woodward.

The event is at 5.30pm and costs £12.

Nights Out For Kings Lynn Squad

Kings Lynn manager Tommy Widdrington clearly has a large enough budget to allow his players over-night stays before long-distance away games in the National North League next season.

"Going into the National North next season, I'm looking at the list and out of 23 away games, and I can see us having to stay overnight at about 12 or 13 of them," he said.

"It simply is not feasible to expect blokes who train every day and class themselves as full time footballers to sit on a bus for four and a half hours to Hereford then be sprightly and ready to go.

"If you want to call yourself professional, and we do, then we have to be professional.

"That's my message."

Darlington Hit Boost The Budget Target

Darlington supporters have dug deep into their pockets and already raised over £120,000 for the club's Boost the Budget campaign.

Penn Delighted To Sign Owen-Evans

Kidderminster manager Russell Penn has said he's delighted to have signed Tom Owen-Evans.

“I am delighted because he is a good player,”said Penn.

“He fits in how we play and what we do, and he’s a great age.

“I think the fans will like his style of play as he’s an attacking player that goes with what with we’ve got.

“The way of his words when he came to see me and Jim last week just sold him to us. Every party was happy, and he couldn’t be signed quickly enough.”

Meanwhile Owen-Evans said it was a tough decision to leave Hereford. However he felt that the 'full time aspect' at Kidderminster would help him.

"If I'm improving and getting better that can only help the team," he said.

"I'm at that stage in my carreer when I want to push on.

"I think this is the right club to do that."

All the Best Lad Said Burr

As reported earlier today, Tom Owen-Evans has left Hereford and joined rivals Kidderminster.

He joined the Bulls in October 2018 after leaving Falkirk and went on to make over 100 appearances scoring 31 goals.

Assistant manager Steve Burr tweeted:

All the best lad . I’ll miss your awful banter but at least I’ll save some money on the horses because you are the worst tipster ever . Thanks for everything you’ve done at Hereford FC. Good luck.

Owen-Evans's first game was at AFC Telford.

Here's a pictorial look back.

Burgoyne Stays With Shrewsbury

Harry Burgoyne has agreed to stay with Shrewsbury Town for a further twelve months.

Sources had suggested that the Ludlow born keeper might have been released.

"Harry has been the number two goalkeeper this year, but he’s been a fantastic support mechanism for Marko and the other young goalkeepers and we’re delighted that he’s extended his stay by a further year," said manager Steve Cotterill.

Hereford Born Burge Looks For Another Club

Two of Coventry City’s double Wembley heroes and Academy graduates are looking for new clubs this summer after being released by their newly promoted club.

Jordan Willis and Lee Burge – who helped the Sky Blues win both the Checkatrade Trophy and gain promotion via the League Two play-off final – have been let go by Sunderland following their promotion back to the Championship after beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

Goalkeeper Burge was released by Robins in the summer of 2019 after coming up through the Academy with the likes of Callum Wilson and Gael Bigirimana.

He immediately joined Sunderland where he was first-choice goalkeeper the season before last, but ended up as third choice last term behind academy product Anthony Patterson and on-loan Bayern Munich man Thorben Hoffmann.

Although born in Hereford, Burge joined the Sky Blues Academy as a boy and was, as the song goes, ‘one of our own’ having spent his formative years under the guidance of coach and legendary keeper Steve Ogrizovic.

He was first handed the No.1 shirt in 2014 following Joe Murphy’s departure but it wasn’t until the last few years that he really established himself at the club’s first choice stopper, making 160 appearances (140 in the league) overall.

He played a key role in two Wembley finals, notably pulling off a brilliant late save to deny his former Academy team-mate Josh Ruffels an equaliser for Oxford United as City secured a 2-1 victory to lift the Checkatrade Trophy in front of 43,000 ecstatic Sky Blues fans in 2017.

He also featured 12 months later as Mark Robins’s men gained promotion from League Two at the first attempt, playing his part in the play-off campaign that climaxed with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Exeter City in the final.

Joys Of A Hereford FC Season Ticket

Simon Wright encourages Hereford supporters to buy a season ticket.

'Season ticket sales matter to HFC.  More than just a number (currently 350 and counting), pre-payment offers financial certainty for the season, figures to light up our club bean counters.  But more seriously, the whispers I hear each season suggests the playing budget is “influenced” by pre-sales.  A decision-making bedrock if you like.

As a summer payer, you’re one of the elite.  That’s your statement of commitment to be at the widely admired Edgar Street.   Or for a few exiles, they’re committing to not going but still want to do their bit.  Simple support for our minority fan-owned club. That card you’ll be picking up before the first kick-off is a symbol of that support.

Let’s not kid ourselves. We’re not signing up for Anfield, our football club has limitations and often faces dour opposition. Supporting Hereford is character building and vocabulary expanding.  And yet, football is as much about being with your mates in familiar locations as the action on the pitch. That shared experience. ‘Mates” is a fluid term at the Street where we pretty know each other by face if not name.  We all rub along pretty well.  On occasions, I’ve taken 20 minutes to walk the car park behind the main stand such are the number of folk wanting to say “Hello.”  I’m sure that’s not just me.  The people – our people – matter.

And yes, in bare financial terms, handing over a lump sum next month as the gas prices rise faster than Premier League salaries, isn’t easy for many and not that easy to justify.  But on an emotional level, an historic level, even an irrational level, it works plenty well. If you possibly can, treat yourself up front to nine months of the best escapism in the world.  At the same time, you’re doing your bit to preserve the beautiful game in the city for future generations.  You know it makes supporter sense.'

England manager Gareth Southgate has called up uncapped West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen for the Nations League games with Hungary, Germany and Italy.

Bowen has scored 18 goals and provided 13 assists for the Hammers this season.

The 25-year-old was in contention for the previous England squad in March but was ruled out by a fractured foot bone.

It's thought Bowen is one of the first players originally from Herefordshire to have made the squad.

Gillela Joins Salisbury

Former Hereford defender Dinesh Gillela has joined Salisbury.

The 22-year-old defender was formerly the captain of the Bournemouth under 21s before a short spell at Hereford where he played several games particularily whilst captain Jared Hodgkiss was unfit.

"I'm delighted to put pen to paper and commit for the season ahead with Salisbury and I’m excited for what the season will bring," said Gillela.

"It was good to hear from the gaffer, Steve himself. I mean he rang me and made it clear he wanted to bring me in."

Leaving My Job Was A Big Risk Said Kouhyar

Maziar Kouhyar will be playing football in the National League next season after his current club York City were promoted yesterday. But it's not long ago since he was selling cars for a living in Solihull.

“Leaving my job was a big risk,” Kouhyar told The Athletic

“But, having got the taste back at Hereford, I wanted to give it one last go. I knew I had to give it everything and that meant concentrating only on football.

“I didn’t want to work, other than play for Hereford. I wanted no distractions. Even though it meant I wasn’t earning as much as last year when still at the car dealership.

“On my days off, I would go and train. Might be in the park or the gym. Anything that I felt would help me live like a full-time pro."

Also pleased with Kouhyar's sucess is Tom Latchem who works for Be who represent the Afghanistan-born winger.

“There is a glaring lack of south Asian footballers playing pro in this country,” said Latchem.

“Something like 16 out of 4,000 at the last count. We want to do something about that and Maz has become a great example.

“I’d seen he had dropped out of football so made contact through LinkedIn. We met and there was almost a sadness about him. But we got Maz in at Hereford through another client of ours (manager Josh Gowling) and the rest has been down to Maz.”

However the club already has 17 players under contract for next season.

"We have to learn from this as a group," said manager James Rowe.

"Obviously a large chunk of this group will take us forward next year because they are under contract."
