Pleasing Performance Said Gowling

Hereford manager Josh Gowling gave his reaction to his side's 1-0 victory over Chester City this afternoon at Edgar Street,

"I think we were solid first half," Gowling told the local media.

"We had some good chances in the first half especially Owen-Evans when he's gone through and he could have passed to Gordon to finish but he's been a little bit greedy.

"I thought we were a lot better second half. We got the ball down and played a bit more, we brought Ismail and Kouyhar on which made a difference in possession.

"I thought Luke was excellent, took his goal well, just taking the pressure off the back four with long kicks from the keeper and him winning headers and second balls just really giving a platform for us to build off.

"Pleasing performance overall.

"We looked at their (Chester's) stats and you can see why they score goals in the last 15 minutes of games, 12 goals in the last 15 minutes, because they just throw men forward.

"So we thought we could catch them on the break and our best opportunities came from catching them on the break but we just didn't put it away.

"Although we've won we want to be better, we want to play better. You take your chances, you end up having a comfortable last five minutes rather than backs against the walls."

Gowling was asked to comment about the referee.

"The one on Owen-Evans was a penalty, he's pushed him in the back and for me that's a penalty and I think he got involved a bit too much. He slowed the momentum of the game down by talking to people rather than letting the game flow a little bit.

"I'm not going back on too much as I'm sure we'll have him again this season but I think this season has been tough for referees. They went through a period last year when there has been no fans so it's been easier to deal with and then all of a sudden they've got the pressure of the crowd especially here, look how many fans we had today, so I sure they feel that pressure.

"We're not to moan too much, we got the result at the end of the day, but it could have been different if the result didn't go our way."

Chester had two goals disallowed towards the end. It looked like both were chalked off for offside. Did you have you doubts about those decisions?

"Yes. When they went in we saw him put his flag up pretty quick. We'll look back at it to see whether they were offside or not but it looked like it but we don't know.

"If they were not, then we're finally getting the rub of the green which we have deserved over the first ten games of the season.

"Credit to Chester, they put men forward, they wanted to get something out of the game. I think they've only had two points on the road all season so that gave us a bit of comfort knowing that if we do go a goal up there was a good chance we were going to win the game so we did that, the lads were resiliant, strong, the back four did really well."

Levi Andoh started the game this afternoon.

"Levi was a late change today, Ben Pollock had some issues with a migraine so we had to make a late change. He's come in, defended really well, got his head on things, so really pleasing performance."

What was the most positive aspect of the game?

"I said to the lads at half time how do you feel and the lads felt fine so I think the most positive aspect was that we felt comfortable all game.

"As a defender I'm a bit nervous all the time!

"We just felt comfortable the whole game."

Gowling praised the crowd.

"They've been brilliant the whole way through even when we were bottom of the form table at home and they are singing and cheering and cllapping the lads off the pitch.

"It means a lot to these boys.

"And the fact we can give something back and gets wins at home means everything.

" Over 2000 here today, it's incredible especially coming through a covid period where a lot of people are struggling financially so to come and pay tickets to come and watch us it means everything to us."
