Ian Holloway, the former Bristol Rovers legend, has told the BristolLive that he never tires watching Ronnie Radford's goal for Hereford in that cup-tie against Newcastle in 1972.
"That shot inspired generations of footballers. Radford actually won the ball in a tackle before exchanging passes with Brian Owen on an appallingly muddy surface and lashing a right-footed shot past Willie McFaul from 30 yards.
"The Match of the Day cameras were there and John Motson’s commentary helped the goal go down in football folklore.
"It was so feted that nearly half a century later a lot of old codgers like me remember it as being the winner in Hereford’s 2-1 replay victory. In fact, that was scored by substitute Ricky George in extra time.
"I
never tire of watching that Radford shot. It is a lasting reminder of
what is possible, not just for individual players, but teams involved in
matches against supposedly unbeatable opposition."
