Yesterday's FA Cup game at Edgar Street was one of those which will go into the record books for various reasons. Hereford won the game 5-2 after being 2-0 down after 16 minutes but there were other 'firsts' as well.
“Club Historian Ron Parrott has been inundated with questions since
yesterday’s events and has attempted to answer them as follows:-
1. When was the last time that a Hereford player scored a
penalty in his debut game? The answer is Guillem Bauza in a 1-1 draw at
Bury in 2010/11
2. When was the last time that Hereford had been drawn against
the same opposition in successive seasons? The short answer is that it’s
happened on 10 previous occasions but only five times in the same round
in consecutive seasons:-
The most recent is 1980/81 against Southend United in 1980/81 and 1981/82 in the 1st Round
Followed by 1972/73 and 1973/74 against Torquay United in the 1st Round
Then 1954/55 and 1955/56 against Nuneaton Borough in the 4th Qualifying Round
Then 1952/53 and 1953/54 against Brush Sports in the 4th Qualifying Round
But taking the biscuit is Bromsgrove Rovers who had the
misfortune to be drawn against Hereford United three seasons in a row
and United won them all! 1948/49 was in the 3rd Qualifying Round,
1949/50 and 1950/51 both in the 1st Round proper.
3. Was this the first time a Channel Islander has played for
Hereford? Not certain but suspect it is! As it’s part of the UK, I don’t
class these as a separate nationality. As an aside, 35
different nationalities have played for Hereford sides
over the years if anyone fancies having a go at them!
4. Has a comeback of this magnitude happened before in the FA
Cup? For those of you with short memories, it happened last season of
course! After a 0-0 draw at Edgar Street against Truro City, we
won the replay at Torquay United’s ground 4-3
after trailling 3-0. In 2016/17 we were 2-0 down
to Alvechurch at home but recovered to win 4-2.
In 1966/67 we were 2-0 down at Kidderminster at half-time in the 4th
Qualifying Round but an unforgettable display
by ex-England winger Eddie Holliday saw us through 4-2. The only other
FA Cup comeback of note was in 1948/49 when we trailled
2-0 at Bromsgrove Rovers in 3rd Qualifying Round and again fought back
to win 4-2”
