First Half Pictures From HFA Giantkillers Cup

A selection of pictures from the first half of tonight's HFA Giantkillers Cup between Pegasus Juniors and Hereford FC's Under 18's.

Young Bulls Storm To Giantkillers Cup Final

Hereford FC under-18s set themselves up with an Edgar Street final after beating Pegasus Juniors 4-1 in the HFA Giantkillers Cup semi-final.

Sean Swann opened the scoring for the young Bulls with the first real chance of the game at Old School Lane, but they weren't ahead long as the hosts pulled a goal back following a series of corners ten minutes later.

Hereford retook the lead before half time as Swann grabbed his second from distance

with under-16s player Kyle Wood smashing home a header from a corner, making it 3-1 after the break.

Swann had an opportunity to complete his hat-trick after a handball saw Hereford awarded a penalty, but his tame shot was saved by the keeper.

But in the dying stages of the game Swann did get his third and he slotted the ball home, booking his side a place in the final against Stourport Swifts.

Under-18s Head Coach Dan Chance thought he said could've been more clinical, despite being on the right end of the 4-1 scoreline.

"Really happy I think we dominated throughout the game and had loads of good possession," Chance said.

"First half they (Pegasus) worked hard which made it difficult for us, put us under pressure, but I thought we came through that quite well. Then second half we've seen a lot more of the possession, dominated for longer spells and created some good chances.

"Probably haven't been clinical enough, but that's the same story as what we had last week. We probably need to convert more of what we're creating, but the fact we're creating them and we're having really good possession and we're dominating games is something we need to be happy with."

Bookies Back Bulls To Win At FC United

The bookmakers feel that Hereford FC will win their National North League match at FC United on Saturday.

Hereford haven't played for two weeks whilst FC United were last in action on Saturday when they took a point from their vist to Southport.

However FC United have only won once at home this season whilst Hereford have won three and drawn seven of their 16 away games.

News Round Up

Former Hereford United goalkeeper Rhys Evans has joined Royal Wootton Bassett Town FC. Recently he had been goalkeeping coach with Hereford FC.

Gary Bowyer has been linked with the vacant managerial post at Braford City. The former Hereford United defender quit Blackpool last August.

Former Hereford loanee George Lloyd is set to stay at Cheltenham for the rest of the season.

"We have had a conversation with Lloydy and we don't want him to go anywhere now," said manager Michael Duff.

"We want to do some work with him and he's played enough football. Rather than learning on the job he can learn with us now. Whether he's involved or not, he's in and around it."

Cup Game For Under 18's This Evening

Weekend Of Live Music At Edgar Street

Edgar Street will host global DJs and live acts across a two-day festival in May.

Last year, Hereford FC Live saw acts such as Peter Andre, Five and Midge Ure play at Edgar Street, and another music event will return across the Late May Bank Holiday weekend.

30 acts will take part in the 'Stadium Music Festival' and Hereford FC general manager  James Watts told the club's official website the event will underline how important the community is to the club.

Q and A With Steve White At Edgar Street

Tickets are available for a Q and A session with former Hereford United striker Steve 'Chalky' White which is taking place on Tuesday March 12th when Brackley Town are the visitors to Edgar Street.

The session along with a pre-match meal will start at 6pm. Tickets cost £10.

In August 1994 White signed for Hereford United after a long spell at Swindon and quickly became a fan's favourite by scoring 44 goals in 76 league appearances.

1995/96 was arguably his best playing season when his prolific strike rate propelled Hereford from 19th to 6th in two months. His 29 league goals made him top goalscorer in the top four English divisions. After failing to gain promotion via the play-offs, he left Hereford and signed for Cardiff City.

Earlier this year Matt Healy spoke to Steve White: https://bullsnews.blogspot.com/2018/05/steve-white-audio-interview.html

Richards Looks Forward To FC United

Marc Richards With Head Of Football Tim Harris
Hereford FC head coach Marc Richards is looking forward to Saturday's game at FC United.

"FC United is a good place to go as it is an atmosphere the lads are looking forward to," Richards told the Hereford Times.

"We have 11 games to go and anything can happen. If you look at the table then the bottom of the top half will still be looking over their shoulders.

"There will be a lot of teams looking to get to that magic number. I've been in and around this level and you never know what that is and it does change."

Richards is still hoping to add to the squad. On loan striker James Waite can't take part in Saturday's match as he is suspended.

"Consider it a work in progress and it's not just up front, we continue to strengthen in all areas when an opportunity arises.

"Watch this space, no expectation and I don't want to get hopes up as it's not that straight forward but we are trying."

On This Day - February 27th

A look back at some news items from February 27th.

1999

HEREFORD United are the latest side to make a note of the name of Boldmere St Michaels' top scorer Neil Kitching.

The Mikes' hot-shot has bagged 17 league goals so far in his first season with them since a summer move from Highgate United.

That record has brought approaches from Sutton Town and latterly Bromsgrove Rovers and now Hereford.

Hereford want to have a look at him in action for their reserves in midweek, and Mikes manager Alan Parsons has said that he would not object.

2001

HEREFORD UNITED 1 - 1 MORECAMBE

Hereford United win 3 - 1 on penalties, after extra time.

FA Umbro Trophy Fifth Round Replay.

Hereford United earned a home match against Burton Albion in the quarter final of the FA Trophy after a lucky win on penalties against Morecambe tonight. After a 0-0 draw on Saturday at Christie Park, the Bulls were favourites for the replay but Morecambe dominated for long periods and will count themselves very unlucky not having progressed themselves.

Club look for CVA settlement

Further information has come to light about the failure of Hereford United's recent attempt to offer unsecured CVA creditors another 5p in the pound as reported by HU-FC.co.uk yesterday.

The two main creditors, Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise, both rejected the proposal and as 75% of the creditors (by value of the amount owed) need to agree to any offer for it to succeed, it was not worthwhile calling a meeting to even discuss the proposal.

As well as the two Government departments it is believed that the Professional Footballers' Association are owed a five figure sum by the club. This could be as a result of a loan to pay players wages before the CVA came into existence in January 1998.

Magic

Dagenham & Redbridge 0 - 9 Hereford United

Hereford United equaled a Conference record this evening as they thrashed Dagenham & Redbridge 9-0 at Victoria Road in front of Sky TV cameras and a crowd of 1617. The record was previously held by Sutton United, who beat Gateshead 9-0 in 1991. This result will act a reminder to Chester City that the Bulls have certainly not given up hope of bringing the title to Edgar Street.

It was, however, the Daggers who started the better of the two sides. Dagenham played some nice passing football in the opening quarter of an hour and produced many difficult crosses from both flanks, one hitting the cross bar and another needing the finger tips of Hereford 'keeper Matt Baker to divert the ball away from goal.

United's first goal was scored against the run of play following a good passing move. Ryan Green played a neat one-two with Rob Purdie and then beat Danny Shipp to the ball who tripped the wing-back in the area. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot, and showing Shipp a red card for a professional foul. Tony James hammered the ball home low to the right of the goal for his 6th goal of the season, all of which have been from the penalty spot.

The red card was a turning point in the game and from then on Hereford were rarely troubled by Gary Hills' play-off chasing team. United had chances for a second through David Brown and Steve Guinan and finally doubled their advantage in the thirty-eighth minute. Brown was played in behind the defence by Guinan then turned his marker and fired a left footed shot into the bottom corner at Tony Robert's near post.

Baker was called into action late on in the first half when a free-kick was layed on to Danny Hill whose first time shot was saved well by Baker, who tipped it round the post. Hereford broke down the other end with pace and won a throw in on the left wing which Green took. Rose played the ball to Simon Willis, who found Green once again. His tidy chip found Brown on the left of the box who drove a powerful cross to Guinan who capped a brilliant Hereford move and made it 3-0 at the break.

United took just two minutes to open up their second half account when Rose crossed a free-kick for Guinan to tap in from close range. After the fourth Hereford took their foot off the pedal and slowed their game down allowing Dagenham to have a period attacking the Hereford goal but didn't look like scoring. The closest anyone came to beating Baker was Jimmy Jackson, who headed just over the bar.

Hereford scored five goals in the last twenty minutes as Dagenham began to tire. Each time Hereford attacked it looked like they were going to score. In the sixty-nineth minute Baker began a counter attack as he released the ball down the left to Rose. Rob Purdie and Brown found themselves with just one defender to beat, so Purdie squared the ball to Brown who beat the advancing 'keeper only to see his shot headed off the line by a covering defender. The resulting corner, well taken by Rose, was headed in at the near post by Brown.

Danny Williams, left out of the starting eleven to make way for new signing Simon Willis, took just three minutes to find the net after being subbed on for Willis. His effort from twenty yards hit the inside of the post and then found the back of the net for United's sixth. Guinan was also replaced by Marc Beesley and Jamie Pitman made way for Dean Craven as Graham Turner looked to rest key players for Tuesday nights trip to Telford.

Beesley scored his first for the club following his transfer from Chester. He met a Rose corner from the right with a half volley at the far post for Hereford's seventh. Two minutes later Green played Williams one-on-one with Roberts and he netted his second. In the eighty-nineth minute man of the match Brown completed the rout and his hatrick when one-on-one with the 'keeper. This was United's eightieth Conference goal this season.

This was an excellent performance by the Bulls which will give them great confidence in going to Telford on Tuesday.

On this 20 day years ago - The Hereford United Documentary

Exactly 20 years ago the Hereford United documentary was about to be screened on BBC2. The club was in financial peril and the programme shows how Graham Turner, Joan Fennessey and HUISA kept the club alive.

Watched 20 years on it is still a fascinating piece. The Newport IOW FA Cup capitulation is hard to view, and the financial implications of that defeat then were massive. Sadly some of the supporters that are featured have passed away, and the 30 minute feature brings back a lot of memories.

Sit back, make a brew, and enjoy.

Yesterday's results in the National North suggest that next Saturday's game at FC United is a must not lose game for Hereford FC.

Both Ashton and FC United gained ground on the Bulls with the former's unexpected 1-0 win at leaders Chorley and the latter's draw at Southport.

19 - Guiseley 31/33
20 - Ashton United 31/30

Neil Reynolds, the FCUM manager, felt the results put pressure on Hereford and other clubs around them.

"Two games undefeated so we look forward to next week now," Reynolds told the FCUM OS.

"A point away at Southport is a huge result and now we've got to kick on, next week is Hereford.

"There's genuine belief that we're staying up.

"People look at the Ashton result, I think it's a great result because it puts pressure on Leamington, Hereford, Darlington, York even.

"We've got to focus. Ten games to go. We've steadied the ship.

"We'll get in training Tuesday, we'll get in training Thursday and we'll put a performance on next Saturday.

"Just keep believing, we're not going down.

"If we show that level of committment and spirit and quality then we are going to give teams a game.

"Lets give a real good account of ourselves (against Hereford) and hop we get that three points we want."

Lloyd Talks About His Time With Hereford

George Lloyd Scores For Hereford At Telford
Former Hereford FC loanee George Lloyd has been talking about his time at the National North club. He was recalled by Cheltenham Town earlier this week from his second loan spell at Edgar Street.

"I really enjoyed my time at Hereford though, I got a lot of game time, so it’s obviously mixed emotions," said Lloyd in an interview with the Cheltenham OS.

"It was different. The fans are amazing there – they’re constantly loud. There is a band of about five teams in there that are getting 3,000 plus crowds, so you’re playing in front of crowds that were in the Football League a few times and that’s good because it prepares you for when you do play in the Football League.

"Rico and Tim did a lot for me. I came straight in and started straight away. They talked to me a lot throughout the game and gave me a lot of game time so I’m really happy with what they did for me.

"When I went to Hereford they were in the relegation zone. They have turned it around a little bit and they’ve had good performances. I don’t think they’ve had the best of luck in games. The game we just had when we got a red card and probably should have won it but we didn’t in the end. Cheltenham are in a better position than what Hereford were when I went in. I think at Cheltenham we’ve got a good group of lads and we just need to keep our heads down and working so we don’t fall back."

Difficult Times At Nuneaton

Hereford Supporters At Nuneaton Last August
Nuneaton FC are so short of cash that it's not certain they will be able to complete their fixtures this season in the National North.

There are hopes that the club can find ten investors willing to put £10,000 each into the club to keep it alive.

But unless this happens soon, the club may find that matters both on and off the pitch could prove too difficult to solve.

Recently club chairman Nick Hawkins stood down after saying he couldn't take the club any further and manager Jimmy Ginnelly appears to be in charge.

Last week it was reported that baliffs had been at the club in pursuit of money after after a generator was used to power floodlights. It's said the bill is around £10,000.

There is also unpaid tax and national insurance to be settled. This amount is around £30,000 and rising.

On top of that players are owed wages.

Ginnelly is hoping that a trial day will bring in much needed funds.

Players are being asked to put up £50 each to take part in the trial which is on March 5th with the promise of place in the squad for those deemed good enough.

Tomorrow Nuneaton travel to York.

After Hereford had played Nuneaton last August former manager Peter Beadle was asked about how they could be full time on gates of no more than 600.

"We ask lots of questions like that of these teams who have offered players far more money than we have and they average 200, 300 people a week," said Beadle.
"Yet they manage to pay players double what we've offered them or certainly a couple of hundred pounds more than we're offering which is like huge money and you wonder where they are getting it from but they are getting it from somewhere.
"Obviously you never like seeing clubs go under and these have been under twice now.
"You don't want them going down that route again, you want them to survive.
"But sooner or later they've got to learn their lesson, you've got to do it within your means. Otherwise it will keep happening."

York's New Stadium Delayed

When Hereford FC recently played York City at Bootham Crescent, it was hoped that the game would have been the last league game under lights at the ground.

However the move to a new stadium has been delayed and they will start new season at Bootham Crescent.

The delay is expected to hit York's income as they had arranged four high profile pre
season fixtures and several commercial events to mark the move.

Meanwhile plans to build homes on Bootham Crescent have been submitted to York Council.

O'Neil Thompson Moves Into Management

Former Hereford United player O'Neil Thompson has moved into management.

He has taken over from Glendon Bailey for the remainder of the season at Humble Lion.

“The only difference (being a coach) is making the decisions," Thompson told the Jamaica Star.

"Coaching can be tough sometimes, as not the best players make the best coach. But on the mental side of it, you must know the game, you have to know how you are going to set up and by doing that, you must know how to assess the game, as you go along because some of the times you might need to adjust the team."

O'Neil Thompson joined Hereford on loan from Barnsley not long after Simon Davey was appointed manager by David Keyte in the summer of 2010.

However he failed to impress suppporters especially after being blamed for an Oxford goal.

'United were looking far more likely to score and when Hereford centre half O'Neil Thompson deserted his post to play right wing on 35 minutes he left his side horribly exposed. Heslop drove forward through the heart of the midfield to exploit that space with no one covering for Thompson's absence.'

On November 1st it was announced by the club that Thompson was leaving Edgar Street.

"O'Neil has been unsettled for some time and we thought it best for everyone if we came to this agreement," said manager Jamie Pitman who, by this time, had taken over from Simon Davey.
"Everybody at United wishes him the very best for the future."
Thompson started six of the opening seven games, missing the other through injury, but then missed a month after a torrid display in the loss to Oxford. He made one further sub appearance at home to Port Vale.

Bowen Moves To Redditch

Former Hereford FC winger James Bowen has moved from Leamington to Redditch.

Bowen wasn't in the Leamington squad when Hereford played there eleven days ago.

"I'm delighted to get the paperwork all done and can't wait to get going now. Looking forward to this Saturday."

Lloyd Recalled By Cheltenham

George Lloyd has been recalled from his loan spell at Hereford with immediate effect.

The Cheltenham Town striker first joined the Bulls in October before briefly being recalled in January.

Cheltenham report that Lloyd will be available for selection for their game against Cambridge United this evening.

On This Day - February 19th

A look back at some headlines from February 19th:

2000:

HEREFORD United expect to have further talks with council leaders over plans to redevelop the area around their Edgar Street home.

Manager and chairman Graham Turner has already met the council leader to consider the proposed revamp.

The major re-development aims to incorporate football, cinema, hotel, car park and other leisure facilities in the town.

"We had an amicable meeting," said Turner.

"We have an open mind on the proposals. It is definitely an exciting project if it comes to fruition.

"Council Leader Terry James's ideas are if nothing else very ambitious and on the face of it could be a tremendous boost to the city.

"However they are very much in their infancy without us having any knowledge at all of the outcome for the club."

2002:

HEREFORD United player/coach Phil Robinson congratulated his side's comeback in yesterday's 4-3 Nationwide Conference win at second placed Boston United.

"At 2-0 down after only 12 minutes I was a little bit worried," he told the Evening News. "Thankfully, the players showed a lot of character."

2004:

West Bromwich Albion defender Tamika Mkandawire has returned to Edgar Street for a one-month loan-spell.

2005:

In a long article in this morning's Daily Telegraph, Sir Alex Ferguson says he is worried about the state of the pitch at Everton than the reception Wayne Rooney might receive for today's FA Cup match, but in the last paragraph mentions Edgar Street.

"But we have had difficult venues before to go to. We went to Hereford United once in the Cup and there was a bloody bull running around on the quagmire of a pitch at half-time. Unless Everton bring a bull on, we have no complaints about the pitch," commented Sir Alex.

2006:

With an important game on Tuesday evening at Edgar Street against Aldershot, Hereford United will be hoping that at least one of their strikers will return from injury.

Guy Ipoua travelled with the squad to Canvey Island and joined in the pre-match warm-up. But he wasn't named on the bench. And there was no sign of Danny Carey-Bertram, Hereford's other injured striker.

However Ipoua's services could be needed if the Bulls are to take three points from Aldershot on Tuesday following the horrific injury to Adam Stansfield and Stuart Fleetwood being substituted after receiving a knock.

Time Capsule Includes FA Cup Memorabilia

A time capsule which includes memorabilia from Hereford United's FA Cup win over Newcastle has been given to the Light Infantry Museum in the city.

Funeral arranger Jacqui Williams created the capsule which contains memories of Hereford.

“Because 2018’s Remembrance Sunday was such a significant one, and because of Hereford’s long connections with the military, I wanted to do something to remember those who died serving their country," she said.

“The community’s response has been amazing. I wanted contributors to add poignant reminders of present-day Hereford and its history as well as writing pieces of advice and memories. I have received so many fascinating documents and items.”

The items are stored in a special casket decorated with images of Hereford. Included are:
  • Copies of the Hereford Times and Ross Gazette including Remembrance coverage;
  • BBC Hereford and Worcester’s 100th anniversary of Armistice day breakfast show, containing interviews from Herefordshire people
  • Pictures of Holmer School’s poppy cascade
  • Memorabilia from Hereford Football Club marking their historic 1972 FA Cup third round victory over Newcastle United
  • A book about St Michael’s Hospice
  • A range of military memorabilia
  • Information from the mayor Sue Boulter and about the Town Hall
  • Painted stones and reflections from children at Hereford Cathedral School
  • Words of wisdom from local care home residents

Dinsley Decides To Leave Hereford

Calvin Dinsley has decided to leave Hereford FC. The midfielder last played at Edgar Street for the HFA XI a week ago. Before then it was the home game against Nuneaton on January 19th.

Dinsley has struggled to stay fully-fit for a couple of seasons.

The midfielder originally came to Hereford on loan from Gloucester in October 2016 and started six matches before Tim Harris, who was manager at Gloucester at the time, recalled him.

"Calvin has had five or six games for Hereford and he comes back to us fit and sharp," said Harris.

In the following March Dinsley quit Gloucester by 'mutual consent'.

"I am very disappointed that things have not worked out this season for both Calvin and ourselves," said Harris.

It wasn't long before Dinsley was back at Edgar Street.

However he quit Hereford a year ago and said at the time that he needed 'to take some time away from football before coming back stronger and fitter than ever.'

He eventually returned but couldn't hold down a regular place in the team.

Dinsley will be remembered in particular for his goal at Fleetwood in the FA Cup.

'Midway through the half, Calvin Dinsley sent the away side into raptures as he opened the scoring. After a period of pressure from Hereford, the ball was worked to Dinsley on the edge of the area. As cool as ever, he curled the ball exquisitely into the left hand side of the net with the keeper unable to get a hand to it.'
