Edgar Street Traffic Delays Expected For Four Months

Traffic delays on Edgar Street are expected for the next four months whilst work to build the new city link road takes place.

Edgar Street - City Link Road works

Construction of the junction of the City Link Road with Edgar Street is due to commence on Monday 7 November, and is expected to last for four months. A traffic management system will be in place, to safely manage the works, whilst Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd carry out the work on behalf of Herefordshire Council.

Andrew Davies, Project Manager for Alun Griffiths said

“To allow construction of the junction of the new City Link Road we need to be able to work in Edgar Street. To keep our workforce safe during the works we plan to manage traffic by coning off the area we need for workspace.

"The cones will ensure that traffic can still flow (with existing lane width reduced) as usual in either direction on Edgar Street and I would like to assure all residents in the area that they will not have their access restricted.”

The City Link Road (CLR) is part of a larger scale inner city regeneration project including the Old Market, Widemarsh Street, Merton Meadow car park and other key areas within the city. It will provide hundreds of new homes and help provide hundreds of new jobs.

In the region of 800 new homes, 35 per cent of which will be affordable, are planned to be built across the site. The new road will open up access to areas for development and regeneration which are currently inaccessible or difficult to access and it will also alleviate some of the volume of heavy traffic from Hereford's inner ring road.

Its forms part of a package of measures which will enable Commercial Road, Newmarket and Blueschool Streets to be upgraded for easier pedestrian movement and also reduce 'through traffic' which will be transferred to the link road. Improvements will also include the provision of a new transport hub at the railway station.
