It Was Probably A Fair Result Said Claridge

In his post match interview Salisbury manager Steve Claridge admitted it could have been worse.

First he was asked if he would take the 1-0 defeat.

"I probably will, I don't quite know how I feel," said Claridge.

"It could have been worse, it could have been better.

"Aside from a ten, fifteen minute spell when they probably could have been out of sight, we've matched them and at the end to be fair we've had two cracking chances to have got back to 1-1.

"It was probably a fair result.I didn't think it would be over here and it's not.

"Now it's about having the belief to go and try to win a game of football at our place. So we'll take that."

You've played at the highest level, was that a high level save from the their goalkeeper Martin Horsell.

"It was, to have those sort of strong hands and the ball going in the top corner and you've what three or four yards out.

"He made a save just after Hereford scored which was a decent save down to his right hand side from Tom.

"He's a good goalkeeper there's no doubt about that. then this is a good team we've played against. There were no surprises today, we knew exactly what to except.

"I think on the day probably their better players played better than our better players, so we'll look to improve our performance going forward and we'll have a little look to see what sort of risks we've got to take to do that."

It will be important that the Salisbury supporters get behind their team next week.

"You saw what it was like today, they nearly got away with one haven't they (Haysham 's disallowed goal) because of the crowd.

"Thankfully he's made the right decision. That's why I had to go on the pitch and go to the referee because I don't think the linesman was going to give it.

"Then you have to think, hold on a minute who's got the best vantage point that's the referee so you need to go and appeal to the referee because everybody can see.

"If you see the photo (taken by Steve Niblett) the boy's got his hand out-stretched and you can see he's just pushed it on. He's apologised. It's not great, it's not what you want to see in all honesty and I wouldn't have accepted his apology if he's run away and pretended he had scored. We don't want to see that, it's not great.

"I thought the referee was very good today, I thought the match officals were fantastic and he got there in the end. And that was the important thing.

"Had that game been decided, these two legs been decided on that then it would have been pretty hard to take.

"It's not great, the boy's apologised fine, but you would have expected maybe a little bit better from him.

"Having said that we got the right decision.

"At 1-0 we still very much in the tie"

What about the second leg?

"I think maybe us to take a bit of a risk, obviously they've got good players on the break. I think you can get at them but by doing that we're probably going to have to take one or two chances. So it will be a calculated risk.

"Both sides will have a look at each other next week just to see first hour just how we are because I don't think anybody wants to lose it in that time but it's very unlikely you're going to win it either.

"It could go right down to the wire, extra time, all the way through to that but we're at home.

"It will be interesting how they come out, it will probably be the same for them. They're away, will they take that 1-0.

"Do you sub-consciously take a step back because you are away, because you are one up, do we sub-consciously take a step forward because we are at home and 1-0 down.

"Today at 1-0 for ten minutes we were on the ropes but after that I thought probably we were the better side for the last twenty minutes and have done more than they have to get back in the game.

"It's finely poised."
