For all Hereford fans particularly those travelling by train please see
attached map at bottom of page which I have marked up for you. I
travelled by train to Hereford in January and it worked pretty well. The
easiest route from Hereford is to go direct to Birmingham New Street
changing at Birmingham University on route which is 1 hour 30 mins.
Change to platform 2 (only 2 platforms) and travel towards Redditch
(trains every 20 mins). It takes about 25 mins from University station
to Alvechurch. From memory I paid about £16 return.
Timings are as follows:-
Hereford to Birmingham University
9.40-11.20
10.40-12.20
11.40-13.20
12.40-14.20
Birmingham Uni to Alvechurch
Every 20 mins (09, 29 and 49)
Alvechurch to Birmingham UniEvery 20 mins (00, 17 and 37)
Birmingham Uni to Hereford
18.05-19.33
19.25-21.01
21.02-22.28
(note later trains if you travel via Worcester)
NB. please check there are no Bank Holiday engineering works!
The walk from the station to AFC is approx. 15 mins going the quickest route via School Lane (see route marked up on map) although I don't recommend this route if in large groups as School Lane is one way and has no pavements! More importantly you'll miss out on the Village pubs so I recommend you walk via Bear Hill towards the village centre which only adds another 5 mins.
In terms of pubs the Weighbridge is worth a visit which is conveniently situated next to the train station. Its a very small quirky pub. Remember we're a village so opening hours at the Weighbridge are restricted (12pm-3pm, 7pm-11pm). In the village the best drinking pub is the Swan which is the closest to the ground (approx 5-10 mins). For a more civilized drink and food try the Red Lion. For the more energetic fan you can walk along the canal side to the Crown but this will make your later walk to the ground longer. And finally the club has a decent sized lounge and bar and is likely to put on extra drinking/food facilities. Cheap booze too.
There is also the usual village chippy (bottom of Bearhill Drive), curry house and chinese opposite the chippy.
If you are driving I suggest you park in the village and walk to the ground as parking is limited at the club. In the old days when gates reached 1000+ cars parked on the Redditch Road and a nearby field but I suspect the police will restrict any traffic on the Redditch Road. There is a free public car park in the village on Tanyard Lane, approx. 60 places but generally it's safe to park anyway in the village.
Look forward to seeing you all on the 28th!!
