Alan Jones Is 70 Today


One of the players who was in the team that knocked Newcastle United out of the FA Cup is 70 today.

Alan Jones joined Hereford United in January 1968 and spent six seasons at Edgar Street.

Born in 1945 Jones started his career with Swansea Town and turned professional in 1963.

Nicknamed 'Trampus' he was signed by then manager John Charles and partnered Mick McLaughlin in central defence.

 

He made over 170 appearances for Hereford, including 75 appearances in the 71/72 season, and scored twenty goals before moving onto Southport in 1974. 

Perhaps his best remembered goal was one against West Ham in the FA Cup At Edgar Street on Wednesday January 9th 1974.

After retiring from football he became a prison officer at Swansea
