Big Occasion For Poole Boss

Poole Town boss Tom Killick says that their top of the table status is a far cry from the club he first arrived at.

When Killick started at the club it used communal dressing rooms whilst in the Wessex League and couldn't get promoted due to poor facilities. At the time Hereford United, their visitors tomorrow, were in League One with Killick telling the Daily Echo:

“To play a club of Hereford’s stature in a league match is brilliant for us. I remember at the start of my time here playing at a level where we found ourselves doing the team talk in communal changing rooms.

“This type of fixture shows just how far we have come in a short space of time and it will be a big occasion for the club."

Poole won the Wessex League for three straight seasons before finally being granted promotion to the Southern League. A second place finish in Division 1 South & West was followed by a seventh place finish last season.

It has been a 20 year fightback for the Pirates, after being evicted from their former home in 1994. Poole Council decided to evict the club to focus the Wimbourne stadium use to Greyhound racing and Speedway - leaving the club to a nomadic existence and a drop from the Southern League to the ninth tier of the pyramid.

They hope to move into a new stadium for the 2015/16 season having made the best of their current ground, a converted school field, that had no floodlights, dugouts, or other basic equipment when they first used the site 14 years ago.

On the pitch last week's loss at St Neots was their first of the season, but they have won all eight home games so far including a 7-0 demolition of Frome Town.

Hereford United boss Jon Taylor confirmed this week that he had two more trialists training with the side. Striker Aaron Opoku and midfielder Aaron Wickham have joined up with the squad after a training match earlier in the week. Wickham, 20, had a short spell with Aldershot last season making one start and six sub appearances, while Opoku, 25, has had a nomadic career across Europe since earning a Ghanian u21 cap.

Taylor takes his side to Poole noting 'Hopefully we can go to Poole and cause another big upset'.
