Next Game: Pre-Season

Dear Elke And John

Earlier today two of Hereford United's directors put out a statement asking supporters to back the CVA.

One of those supporters has responded to the statement. Below is his view.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write to Hereford United fans – both attendees and boycotters – this morning.

I’m really pleased the events of Friday night ‘changed the world’ for the two of you. Edgar Street has played tricks with many minds over the years but I have to say your conversions are two of the most remarkable stories I’ve ever heard.

I do, however, feel it is only right to respond to your letter as I find much of what you write in pretty bad taste and also about as much in touch with the reality of the club’s situation as comments that have come from Tommy, Andrew and Joel in recent weeks.

I get the impression you have realised that people have seen through the CVA proposal, the fantasy it represents and that you are concerned it may not get accepted.

Thanks for trying to reassure us there’s a logical reason why it’s ‘fantasy’ but I’m sorry I don’t swallow it. The CVA has been put together to try to buy more time to reach the end game that Tommy – or whoever he represents - set out for. It will not work – we all know it – and sadly creditors will not get paid. Rather than carrying on this charade and giving creditors false hope, just give it up now and go. In one breath you more or less say the CVA is flawed, then in the next you ask people to vote for it. Brilliant.

For the first time perhaps the new regime could go for the ‘honesty’ option?

Just so you know, as a fan I would implore any new phoenix club to make links with those individuals and businesses left out of pocket when Hereford United (1939) Limited folds. We care about our community in Herefordshire you see and would do our best to put things right if that’s possible.

I know I am not alone in thinking this but your letter reads like emotional blackmail and as an appeal to fans – interestingly not to creditors as that may well be illegal – to try to help you keep the club alive by extending your game. Clearly Tommy’s not involved now so everything is OK. As if….

I’m sorry but Tommy’s interviews at the game on Saturday did not sound like someone who’s looking to take a backseat – quite the opposite in fact. He doesn’t need us he said, he can sustain the club without us he reckons. So who’s going to run the show now Tommy has gone? Please share that with us because in the CVA proposal there was a guarantee (although a fairly worthless one) that Tommy would cover the shortfall in funds during the course of the CVA.

Just a couple of other things as a point of order. Most staff did not leave AFTER they were paid. Most left BEFORE they were paid because they were sick of being lied to by Tommy and his cronies. It’s great that they’ve been paid now but the damage has already been done so don’t try to ‘do a Lonsdale’ by rewriting history.

And while we’re talking ‘history’, whether the club lives, dies or is reborn as a new club, the things us supporters have witnessed at Edgar Street or on our travels will always be OUR history and we will always lay claim to it.

A newly formed club with a slightly different name – a situation that would be forced upon us through no fault of our own – would make no difference to our history. Ask Chester, Telford and Newport fans if they’ve lost their history – guess what their answer would be?

In addition, I’ll have you know that I don’t know a single fan who actually ‘wants’ the club to fold.

Even the most ardent boycotter would like the club to survive but sadly, while the new regime remain in charge, a huge amount of people can see that our best hope of trying to ensure Edgar Street remains the home of football in Hereford is for the club to fold.

At least that way everyone associated with Tommy Agombar will hopefully leave our proud city and let us – ‘the spiritual owners’ of Hereford United - try to rebuild what we can from the mess left behind by recent (mis)management of the club.

So, in closing, thanks for your attempts to communicate with me. I feel like I’m being ungrateful when I say I wish you hadn’t bothered but that is exactly how I feel.

If I thought there was anything genuine behind the many words you have uttered I’d be far more charitable but nothing I’ve seen from the new regime – which you are part of - over recent weeks suggests anything going on at the club is ‘genuine’.

As someone else has already said, your words could have been condensed quite easily into the following, simple threat:

“Please support us - or else.”

Yours sincerely,

Mr C Bumpkin,
Herefordshire
